Community Chatter: What are your (unusual) hobbies or interests?

Chances are at some point in your life you have been asked about your hobbies or interests - it is a fairly common ice breaker for work meetings and a staple of online group applications.  And if you are like me, then you can sometimes scramble to come up with an answer.  I mean, sure, I knit, but does that count as a hobby?  And can you count travel as a hobby when you only do it a time or two a year?

But recently I came across an article about how people have been spending their time during quarantine and I thought that it'd be fun to ask people what their more interesting or unusual (to them or to the world) hobbies or interests are.   Read on to see what the team had to say.

From Lisa:

Ok, so I am definitely a bit of a magpie when it comes to hobbies and/or interests, jumping from shiny to shiny as easily as can be.  But here are some of the ones that have stuck around for a bit:

  •  I have been collecting original editions of the Betsy-Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace, and the Witch Saga by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor - but I can only buy them from stores in person, no internet shopping.  This is a fantastic excuse to visit used bookstores and antique stores when I travel!
  • Every month I create a Spotify playlist for that month.  Sometimes these lists are 40 or 50 songs long, sometimes they are only 12.  At the end of the year, I take one day and listen to every month in order to remind me of the year that I have had and then I delete them and start all over again in January.
  • I am working on collecting a hockey puck and team cup from every arena in the NHL.  Again, these have to be bought in person, and have to be when I attend a game there.   I had to amend the rules when I got to go to the AllStar game in Los Angeles a few years ago, I got a puck and a cup from the event, but I still need to go back and watch a Kings game and pick up a Kings puck and cup.  I've got 6 NHL arenas, 2 AHL arenas, and one AIHL (Australian Ice Hockey League) under my belt so far.  27 to go!  (I know, the math is actually 26, but since I haven't been to a Kings game, I'm counting it as an arena still to visit)

From Morgan:

Image from iOS (29).jpgAs a mother of an almost 3 year old and almost two month old, I don’t have a tremendous amount of time for hobbies but when I do get a spare moment I’ve been really into plants. Now I know a lot of people that have been all about the #plantmom life for a long time but it’s brand new to me! My husband gave me a peace lily as part of my Mother’s Day gift and it all started from there. We have a sunroom in our house and I’m determined to have it full of houseplants in beautiful pots and make it a little oasis. I even downloaded an app on my phone for tips and plant care reminders. If you have the same interest, I’d love to hear your favorite houseplants as well as any tips!

From Sasha:

My unusual interest would be that I like to research a lot about medicine, reviewing symptoms, and formulating a diagnosis. I'm not too sure if I am watching too much of Grey's Anatomy, lol. But if you give me a scalpel, I know exactly what to do........Actually, I do not haha.  I have no interest in entering that field, but I credit this to my circle of friends and my sister, who are all studying to be doctors. Our conversations involve things they are learning, and I want to be a part too. I do surprise them sometimes, and they even learn from me! Nonetheless, I do enjoy this a lot!

From Kiala:

I know I'm not alone in this one, but serial killer documentaries/podcasts are definitely my unusual interest. For me it's the psychology behind some of the most horrific murders that's so intriguing to me. I also enjoy learning about how the media and communities handled these events and what lead to their arrest. True Crime is not for everyone but for me, there's nothing like getting cozy on the couch and putting it on to relax at the end of the night. Thank goodness my husband doesn't mind!
