Public Relations expense

I must say this is a very interesting question, I can see a scenario where both could be possible but if I had to choose between the two, I would suggest that it would go under advertising.  While I can think of a couple scenarios where it would make good sense for it to be considered a professional service (Reputation Repair), I would think that most instances of PR really are focused on promoting the company and/or the image of the company. Additionally, a well placed Press Release that is promoted across the right channels is great for Search Engine Optimization!

Not to muddy the water here but I would like to pose a question to all of the accountants in the community, if a large and expensive (say over $2500.00)  PR campaign was initiated to increase brand awareness and/or repair a damaged brand would you depreciate the expense over time?  Would the transaction increase the goodwill of a company?

I must say, I'm intrigued! For many small business/self-employed, the PR function is often last on the list of budgeted expenses. What's your business and how are you spending your PR dollars? I'd love to hear more about what you're up to.
