Step Into Your Vision

"Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion." -Jack Welch

Happy Happy Wednesday, and thank you for joining us here in the Talk About Your Business discussion. Today, I wanted to share some tips about creating and communicating your vision while being an active listener and motivated. Without further ado, let's dive in!

As business owners, establishing where you'd like your business to go and how you expect to get there is an excellent first step to make when creating a vision. This is of paramount importance because you can't lead if you have no sense of direction. Once you have created that vision, the next step would be to bring the image to life and relay that information to the rest of the team so that the entire organization is on board with the plans to move forward.

Now that the vision is set. What are the ways to communicate and pitch this plan effectively? As owners, how do you make sure that every hand put to work in your organization is in sync with the goal at hand? This can be done using the Rule of Three. This method allows you to communicate your message three times, in three different ways, so that employees can thoroughly comprehend the message being given. Simplification (by being direct) is a key point to remember when communicating, whether in spoken or written language. Nonverbal communication is also an essential factor to bear in mind. Our body language, eye contact, facial expression, tone, etc. should match the same energy as the message we are aiming to give.

Now that the vision is set in stone and the vision is communicated let's work on our listening skills. A useful way to practice active listening is to pretend that you will be tested on the information you have just heard afterward. If you are trying to build a relationship with your employees, you have to learn to connect with them. It shows that you welcome their advice and their assistance in "getting things off the ground" as it relates to your goal. Be a good sport, listen, and give honest advice when they ask questions.

Now that we have the vision, communication, and listening skills, let's motivate. As the leader, you have to motivate yourself too and walk the talk, so to speak. If your workers are not motivated, don't expect much productivity or support from them because you are not pushing them to unlock their full potential. Once you establish the vision, say why you are doing this, and show that you care and trust them to continue this journey, this builds the foundation on which your organization will develop and motivate them to achieve this.
