Today I’m discussing this article from Inc.com that talks about understanding your customer’s pain points. I know that phrase gets thrown around a lot in the business world, but every business owner wants their service or product to fulfill their customer’s needs. This is important even for the most experienced people in the biz. So what does this mean and how can you apply it?

Understanding their pain points helps you know where you may need to make changes and how to be more effective in your marketing. Inc.com has 4 tips for how to accomplish this.

1. Be Mindful of the type of problem you’re trying to solve

Common problems are pricing, productivity or convenience. It can also be a mix of them as well. Don’t become so focused on one issue that you don’t see the other issues your customers are experiencing. Keep an open mind and be aware there may be multiple problems that need to be addressed.

2. Ask better questions

The best way to learn is to talk directly to your target audience. They are the best resource to tell you what you’re missing, but asking simple yes or no questions won’t give you the valuable information you need. As the article states, “Quality questions will provide quality answers.”

3. Look at what causes you to lose leads
Not everyone becomes a customer of yours, but if you are having multiple interactions with your potential customers, it’s a good idea to use it as a learning opportunity. The article mentions asking “non-converting” questions to see why they ultimately decide not to go with your business. Also, lean in to other members of your staff because they may have insight and ideas that you don’t.

4. Don’t forget about your competitors
Who's your biggest competition and what are they doing they you aren’t? You can also take a look and see what their customer complaints are through negative reviews as this is another opportunity to hear feedback.

Hope these tips are helpful and get you to ask good questions and learn more about your customers!
