Join nowHi, I own a salon and want to give away tickets to a local concert as a promotions. To enter you would have to refer a friend. Can I do this and write this off as advertisement?
Thanks for posting in the Community for your concern, Strands of love.
Yes, and we can do this in QuickBooks Online. Let's start by creating a new line item for the giveaway (concert ticket) and ensure to enter the balance as 0 to show the promotional item is for free. Here's how:
Once done, we can follow the steps below to create two COGS accounts for the promotional expense and giveaway. This way, the giveaway account will offset the value of the promotional expense.
We can follow the same steps to create the account for "Giveaway." Moreover, I suggest reaching your accountant to have them provide you with the appropriate steps and avoid mistakes.
What's more, you can personalize the appearance and layout of your sales forms in the future. Here's an article to help you: Customize invoices, estimates, and sales receipts in QuickBooks Online.

The advice given by @FaithA is far too complicated and using COGS makes no sense. There is no "write off" in this case. A write-off is a loss due to an unreceived payment or loss on an asset. All you need to do is to record the purchase of the tickets as an advertising expense when you buy them. It would be nice to have some documentation that you gave them away as part of a promotion in case you need to substantiate the expense in the future.
