EIN and W2 question

My father passed away at the end of 2022 and his company is now apart of his estate, which has it's own EIN. Half way through 2023 we swapped over to QB payroll and filled all payroll taxes under the estate EIN. I just found out that the payroll company we used originally was filling the taxes under the old EIN that was used when my father was alive, now I'm not sure what to do for the W2s and taxes. Any ideas??

EIN and W2 question

Welcome to the Community space.

Our condolences to the bereaved family. Let me share insights about changing the Employer Identification Number (EIN) and direct you to the best help possible.

If you're using QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Payroll Assisted, here's how the accurate way to change EIN:

  1. Download, fill out, and sign the Entity Change packet.
  2. Prepare the supporting documents listed in the packet.
  3. Email the completed packet along with the supporting documents to EntityChanges@intuit.com.

You’ll be notified via email within 3-5 banking days that we received your entity change packet and supporting documents.

You can continue to run payroll until one of our experts contacts you. If you have questions about the entity change process, email us at EntityChanges@intuit.com.

However, utilizing the QBDT Payroll Basic, Standard, or Enhanced, you need to contact us first so we can update the EIN in our system. Feel free to read this article for more info: Change your legal business information for payroll.

Concerning what to do with the W-2s and taxes, you also need to reach out to the IRS. There might be some guidelines about it.
