How do I disable the automatically calculated sales tax and continue to select my sales tax manually due to working in several different counties?

I need the manual sales tax selection to be the default, not automatic sales tax which only applies to my area.  I work outside my area.

For Automated sales tax experience, you have the option to turn off the sales tax. However, once the feature is disabled, you're unable to add sales tax to your invoices. That said, you can manually select the appropriate tax rate when creating one. 

 

Additionally, defaulting a specific sales tax rate is unavailable in the new sales tax system (Automated sales tax experience).

 

If you still want to turn this off, below are the steps you can follow:

 

  1. Navigate to the Taxes menu then click Sales tax.

Well, you wrote that you would do that, which is a good start, but then you didn't actually tell us how to do that.

 

So, how do we "turn off the automated sales tax and default a custom rate"? You know, like QuickBooks Desktop, where you can pick the correct tax item to use based on what is appropriate for the sale?

This did not answer the question.  We don't want to turn off sales tax completely.  We want to go back to manually selecting the correct sales tax.  The automated sales tax is choosing sales tax based on my office address.  This is wrong.  We need to be able to turn off automated sales tax.  Please address the question that was asked.

Please know that turning off sales tax is only available if you don't have any existing transactions that have sales tax. If you have any, you would need to remove them from the system.

That doesn’t work. I already have shipping addresses setup for my customers and it still recalculates based on my location when my invoicing process syncs up. This was not a problem prior to your forced automatic sales tax.  What we need is a way to disable that feature all together.

We are having the same issue. We set custom rates and the automatic sales tax feature overrides the custom rates. We need to go back to the old method of calculating, but that option is not avaliable. Has anyone figured out how to revert back? Thank you for any help.

I appreciate you following the previous steps given by my colleagues. You mentioned you were able to revert from the manual sales tax calculation in QuickBooks Online. If you received this message "Sorry. We see you've collected sales tax on one or more items. This means you can't turn off sales tax." after clicking on the Turn off Sales Tax feature. I'd like to inform you that we have an ongoing investigation on this matter.

 

If so, I'd suggest contacting our support to get your account listed on the affected users and receive updates on the matter through email. Here's how:

 

  1. Log in to your QBO company.
  2. Select Help (?).
  3. Click Contact Us and choose a way to connect with us:
  • Start a chat with a support expert.
  • Get a callback from the next available expert.

Same issue here, QBO switched us to automatic sales tax without us wanting it and it creates extra steps on every single sales receipt or invoice now! They obviously don't know or care how people use their product. 

 

CAN YOU JUST TELL US IF WE CAN TURN AST OFF AND REVERT BACK TO MANUAL SALES TAX SELECTION WITH A DEFAULT?!?!? 

 

This is what works for us. I'm sure that there was a small percentage of QBO users for whom this worked but not us.

It isn't the experience we want you to have when using the program, and we recognize the relevance of having the option with fewer steps when managing sales taxes inside QuickBooks Online (QBO).

 

As previous representatives provided, please be aware that the option to turn off the automatic sales tax is available after you get rid of or delete those transactions with sales taxes. Once you're through this, refer to this page for more details: Turn off sales tax in QuickBooks Online.

 

If the issue persists, and you're unable to revert back to manual sales tax, we recommend contacting our Customer Care Team so they can gather more details and come up with a fix. We'll input the steps to get you going:

 

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.

We’ve been using quickbooks for 18 years with sales tax!  What the hell do expect me to do?  I DO. OT want to turn sales tax off. I want to REVERT to manual sales tax because this auto $#*+ causes more work for us.

I’ve submitted feedback on this issue several times over the last several months. Nothing happens. I am going to have to look for a new cloud type accounting application.  I can’t work like this. If anyone has any suggestions on a different application please let me know.

RE: I’ve submitted feedback on this issue several times over the last several months. Nothing happens. 

 

Likely nothing ever will.

 

Intuit is very sure their automatic-sales-tax feature is super cool and that soon you will grow to love it. Mind you, they won't fix the issues, but they'll still foist it on everyone in order to save them from themselves. I mean, after all, what if a customer did sales tax wrong?! Can't have that!  Sure, that was fine for 30 years, but not anymore.

Really, you do? Then why isn't it possible? Have you shared your epiphany with anyone else at Intuit - perhaps someone that can do something about it, since it is essential, as you point out?  Perhaps someone who can't see the light the way you do? Someone who thinks it's perfectly reasonable to foist a half-baked sales tax feature on customers and then not let them revert to the old way which actually worked?

Reading these threads should be mandantory before giving Intuit your business. It is appalling how they gas light people with non-answer answers.

Most of the issues I have encountered after starting QB Online have led me to many many threads with questions, complaints, a lot of non-answer answers, and pissed off customers.
