Payroll Refund

We have received a payroll refund to our bank, which just says ACH payroll credit, I cannot find an agency which we overpaid.  I now just need to know if it is correct to apply it under payroll refunds.  It seems that I need to apply it to the account which it came from, but I can't find it.

Payroll Refund

Welcome to the Community space. @Cindie31.

Let me guide you on where to find the agency for which you overpaid and apply the payroll to the correct account.

Firsthand, you can review your past tax payment history to see what agency you usually pay. I also recommend checking your email. It might be that you received a credit note notice for an overpaid payroll tax from the IRS or your agency. Then, see what to do if you receive a payroll tax notice.

If the quarter hasn't ended yet, you can leave the overpayment as it is. It'll cover any additional payroll tax liabilities you have for the rest of the quarter until it's all used up.

But if you want to apply the overpayment to the next quarter or request a refund instead, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Taxes, then Payroll tax.
  2. Choose Payments.
  3. Look for the Overpaid tax, then select Resolve. If you don’t see the Resolve option, contact us for help.
  4. Pick one of the following if available:
    • Request a refund (Note that you'll need to contact your tax agency to get your refund)
    • Apply to a future tax payment (recommended)
  5. Click Confirm, then Done.
  6. Contact the IRS or your state agency to request refunds or apply taxes to future periods.
