How do we turn off "Automatic Calculation" of sales tax for a client?

We are based in NC but sell products to clients who have locations in other states.  We have not reached nexus in those states but the recent update to QB Online does not allow us to turn off the "Automatic Calculation" of sales tax for those customer accounts (even though we have manually set their tax rate).

How do we turn off "Automatic Calculation" of sales tax for a client?

Thanks for chiming into this forum, excaliburawards. Let me help you manage automatic sales taxes in your QuickBooks Online account.

With QBO's automatic sales tax feature, the option to turn off the "Automatic Calculation" from a transaction isn't available. However, you can manually select the tax rate specific to your customer's state as a workaround when creating an entry. This way, it'll give you more a detailed breakdown of the taxes being associated. To do this:

  1. In your online account, go to Sales and select Invoices.
  2. Choose the invoice you want to specify these taxes and click Edit from the Action column.
  3. From the invoice transaction, hover to the Sales tax section and click See the math.
  4. Then, choose a specific tax rate under the How your sales tax is calculated: section.
  5. Review all invoice details and click Save and Close.

Additionally, you can utilize this reference to guide you in managing and filing sales tax returns and payments: File your sales tax return and record sales tax payments in QuickBooks Online.

We're always available in this thread if you have additional questions when managing sales tax adjustments or other QuickBooks concerns. Please don't hesitate to leave them in the comments below. Keep safe, and have a good one!

That's not what the OP asked for. Did you even read the question?

How do we turn off "Automatic Calculation" of sales tax for a client?

This does not work for me as every time I change the sales tax to the correct item- it auto changes back to the automatic sales tax by location that QB has set up. We need an actual way to turn this off!

How do we turn off "Automatic Calculation" of sales tax for a client?

I hear your sentiments, Alissa. QuickBooks uses several factors, including the customer's sales tax-exempt status, the specific locations of the sale and product shipment, and the sales tax category for the service or product, to calculate the total sales tax rate for each sale.

If you want to turn off this feature, you'll need to delete any transactions that include sales tax, but that's not recommended. However, if you decide to proceed, you can use the Transaction List by Customer to see all entries with sales taxes and print or save it for future reference.

I know it can be time-consuming to delete transactions one at a time, and turning off the automatic calculations for a specific client could benefit both you and other customers. That said, I recommend forwarding this request to our product development team. Our engineers will carefully review your ideas and may consider implementing them in the future.

To send your input, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then choose Feedback.
  2. Type in your ideas, suggestions, or recommendations.
  3. Hit Next to submit.

Your input holds significant value to us. You can track your recommendations through our QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website.

Moreover, I'm adding these articles that will help you understand how QuickBooks computes sales taxes and how you can generate a report that displays your non-taxable or taxable sales.

The information provided above will help you to manage your transactions and turn off the sales tax feature within the program. If you need any assistance, please let us know. We're always available to help you and are ready to assist you.

How do we turn off "Automatic Calculation" of sales tax for a client?

I know how challenging it must be to constantly adjust the automatic sales tax calculations, only to find that it doesn't align with your business needs. I'll hear you out on this, Tam11. Let me provide the steps for sending feedback to our product developers.

The option to turn off the automatic calculation of sales tax in QBO is currently unavailable. I recommend sending feedback to our product developers to let them know about your request to have the ability to turn off the automatic calculation of sales tax. This way, our product engineers can consider adding this feature in future updates.

Here's how:

  1. Sign in to your QBO account.
  2. Click the Gear icon at the top, then Feedback.
  3. Enter your comments or product suggestions.
  4. Press Next.

Once done, our designated team will review it. You can track your future requests through the QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website.

In addition, you can refer to this article to learn how to file your sales tax return and record your sales tax payment in QBO: File your sales tax return and record sales tax payments in QBO.

Comment on the post if you still have concerns about sales tax. I'm always available to help you.
