Sales tax - components

My state, MN, has a state tax, county taxe(s), city taxes and now has added transportation and housing taxes. I need 6 components for some of the cities to have an accurate tax rate. But can only add 5 ??

What is my work around - this starts OCT 1 but I need it to feed on my proposals now for future work.

Sales tax - components

We're glad to have you back here in the Community, @HugoSyd. We understand how important to add components for an accurate tax rate. Let me help you clear things up and achieve your goal of adding tax components.

But before anything else, we'd like to know how you set up your state tax and if there's any error message to help us navigate if there's an existing issue about this.

If you'll track sales by one tax agency, consider setting up a combined tax rate.  With a combined tax rate, your customer sees only one tax rate on their sales form.

However, the sales Tax Center keeps track and splits out the appropriate amounts for each agency. We can add up to 7 components in a combined tax rate.

Here's how to add a combined tax rate:

  1. Go to Taxes, then select Sales tax.
  2. Click the Sales Tax Settings.
  3. Scroll down. Then, tap Add rate.
  4. Pick the Combined.
  5. Enter a name for the combined rate and the different sales tax requirements.
  6. Enter details in Rate 1, then Rate 2. To add more, click the Add another rate.
  7. Once done, tap Save.

For detailed info, you can read this article: Set up your sales tax in QuickBooks Online.

Please come back if you have additional questions. We'll respond to it as soon as possible. Keep safe, and thanks again.

I pay to 2 States, in MN I have state tax, city tax, county tax, and now 2 new Metro taxes (also an urban transportation tax)

It totals 6 tax inputs for the combined rate and I cannot input more than 5. When I have reached 5 the "add another component" box shades out. So I cannot add "7" components.

I can see the need to add another component, and I'm here to help you identify why you can't add more than five (5), HugoSyd.

I've tried it on my account and was able to add up to seven (7) components successfully. In your case, it may be you can't add more due to a possible issue with your browser. You can perform some troubleshooting steps to fix it.

You can start accessing your QBO account using a private or incognito window that does not store any cache, making it a suitable choice for exploring potential browser issues. Please use these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P

Log back in to verify if you can successfully add another component. If so, return to your regular web browser and clear its cache. This helps refresh the webpage and potentially resolve any display issues. You can also choose from various compatible web browsers that work well with QuickBooks Online and give you the best performance.

I'm adding some related resources for your reference with the sales tax feature in QuickBooks Online:

Furthermore, you can generate reports related to sales tax to ensure compliance with tax regulations by providing accurate and up-to-date information on sales tax collected and owed.

You can always get back to the Community if you need more help managing sales taxes or other issues you may encounter. We're here to guide you every step of the way.

I switched to Firefox because Chrome is an issue with Sales Tax anyway.

Used an incognito window and tried to set up a combined tax rate and again I am stopped at 5 components.

The linked reference resources don't apply.

I've been using QB for 25 years, online for about 4. Maybe QBonline won't work for MN sales tax anymore?

Thanks for updating us on this @HugoSyd, and I appreciate your proactive efforts in performing the troubleshooting steps provided by my peer above.

Please know that MN or Minnesota state works or is supported by QuickBooks Online. In your case, since the same thing happens even after performing some browser fixes, I recommend reaching out to our QuickBooks Support Team. This way, they can further investigate the issue's root cause and walk you through the resolution.

Here's how you can contact them:

  1. Open your QBO account.
  2. Go to the Help icon in the top right-hand corner.
  3. Select Search, then Contact Us button.
  4. Please enter your question in the box and hit Continue.
  5. Choose the best way you'll want to reach out to us.

Before contacting them, please consider checking their available hours since they can only accommodate you Mondays to Fridays from 6 AM to 6 PM PT and Saturdays from 6 AM to 3 PM PT.

Ok seriously now, you don't think I've already spent hours on the phone with Support??

The last person I reached knew less about the sales tax section of QBO than I did.

Does anyone know how to get 6 seperate tax items in 1 group??

Hugo,

Did you ever get this figured out?

I had to convert/update to the version of sales tax that figures taxes for you. Except that isn't always accurate so we do all the sales tax choices manually.
