Why can't we print a 1096 now? This is first year ever!

I have printed 1096 from various QB products since 2011! All the relevant information is in Quickbooks already and provided in the summary. Why would they allow you to print your 1099s but not a 1096? It makes no sense other than to force you to pay them for more services!

It's an expoitive tacitc! This is not the most unethical thing they have done to me but it does add to the list. They have such a monopoly on the market. Why can't any other software company get it together to come up with a comparable product?! I would change over in a heartbeat. Providing better customer service than QB would be so easy!

Hello there, Mari. I completely understand the inconvenience you have faced, and your concern is valid. I'm here to share some details about the 1096 in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

While QBO doesn't support printing of 1096 since it's not needed when e-filing your 1099s. You may download a 1096 form from the IRS and use the summarized information of the 1099s in QBO as a workaround.

Moreover, I highly recommend sending direct feedback to our product engineer to add this feature to the program. They handle requests and analyze them for future updates.

To send your request:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Feedback.
  3. Enter your comments or product suggestions.
  4. Tap Next to submit.

Additionally, you can refer to this article to learn more about 1099 common concerns. You can read this article: Get answers to your 1099 questions.

Let me know if you have other concerns with your tax forms. I'll be here to lend a hand. Take care.

This doesn't explain why I was able to print a 1096 in previous years and not now. Why would this change? QB has all the relevant information and can provide a summary of 1099 so why remove the 1096 feature?

I can share additional information about printing Form 1096, @maritzamcevoy

Currently, QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Contractor Payments don't provide Form 1096 as it's no longer necessary if you have filed electronically. However, you can still get a summary of your e-filed 1099s from the 1099 filings tab.

Here are the steps:

  1. Go to Taxes then select 1099 filings.
  2. Select View summary.

The following article provides instructions on printing 1099 and 1096 forms in QuickBooks who need to file their forms with the IRS as well as information on where to purchase the necessary 1099 kit and how to e-file your forms directly with the IRS: Print your 1099 and 1096 forms.

Refer to the following article if you need further guidance on correcting errors or filings on 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC forms after they have been e-filed: Correct or change 1099s in QuickBooks

Please let me know if you need any further information about printing your Form 1096. I'm always here to assist you. Have a great week!

Unbelievable. Since previous years it worked in QB Online and the form hasn't change, the code was there. That means they paid a programmer to conciously cut it out so that us small business owners, bookkeepers, accountants would NOT have that feature. Unbelievable.

@radically_simple_accounting   There was another thread about it.  Someone came up with a way to help everyone out.

This is unbelievably frustrating.  I have clients that just have a few 1099's no employees and I cannot generate a 1096.  Why not at least let us know.  If you can print 1099s you should be able to print a 1096.    No, instead, we'll just force you to use our service.  This on top of the deadlines at this time of year.    Totally unacceptable.

I've been doing this since 2008, every year, more and more controls and forced features and higher subscription rates.  No one can buy the PC version so companies that are a start up must pay a fee or have their accountant do it.   It's a cost that some can't afford, the monthly subscription.

And my favorite, questionnaires and surveys during my work time.  Invasion of privacy, annoying, takes me off task.  Uninvited and a poor business practice.  What if all companies did this, I'd be looking at nothing but surveys all day.

Have you looked into Xero accounting software? I'm thinking of trying it out. I HATE QB! They use exploitative tactics to get more and more money. They even had a sales person deliberately mislead me to overcharge me hundreds of dollars. Who has time to learn new software while running their business right? I'm going to find the time because QB is only getting worse. If it's any good I'll keep my QB account just to tell everyone about it. I've already wasted so much money with them.

I have not but will look into it.  Thank you for sharing your frustrations.  The greed is beyond.  Those that use payroll service, good luck getting help.  You have to call or it the help ticket several times to get someone competent.  I don't think it's legal to hijack someone's work flow with surveys and ads for financing just because they are using the software.  Total intrusion and wastes working energy.  Email like everyone else, so we can attend to it in the timing of our preference.  It's not like the work does not require total concentration, but here - rate this product!?  The thing is, why allow 1099's to print if you don't allow for a 1096, it was always there.  The demands of the day are hard enough without the roadblocks.

Will be looking into the software.  Forms will be late, for no reason, just for greed and a total disregard towards those who rely on their products.

Thanks. I went with neat handwriting.

The Intuit "summary" given to help do the 1096's on our own didn't include the client's name, email & phone # to use but if you know that on your own, and know what a correct 1096 looks like, you can hand-write it easily & quickly.

Up to a few years ago, I could call the IRS and they would mail me free1099's and 1096's, as many as I wanted. I used them to save money for my own business, and client's who had very small busiensses. I would hand write all of them. One time the IRS sent me a letter saying I had the SSN wrong but I did NOT have it wrong. That was just once with years of hand-writing the whole deal. See if they complain this time?

It's absurd that they made an effort to help their customers less!

Yes, it is total BS.  I do not want to use the electronic service for 1099s.  Possibly the worst company ever for corporate greed.  Also, please quit running ads for your services on QBO.

This could be a stretch, or it could be real. It's about how the formatting of Office Depot 1099's paper forms didn't align correctly this year.

I've always used Office Depot 1099's, same for this year. I've used the same printer for the last 4 years. Same clients, some of the same vendors even. And for the first time ever, it didn't format correctly. The adjustment alignment they include for printing checks is not in this section. Intuit's help notes offered no help. I found another thread that said Intuit tech supports answer was, "buy Intuit's forms if you want it to line up correctly".

I went with badly formatted 1099's. So badly formatted, the only way the address appeared in the window of the envelope was if I crimped the bottom of the form. So I included an extra flat form for vendor courtesy. Anyone else have this problem?

Deduction, not certainly but I'm wondering if Intuit changed their code? We can safely assume Office Depot used the same forms this year they used the year before in terms of alignment. As to the future, will Intuit change their code until we all give up and use their forms or their services? It certainly makes one go "hmm".
