Hi there, @dave-efortonco-c.

Thanks for sharing your first concern with the Community. I'm here to help you move your company file to QuickBooks Online.

There are some pointers that we need to take note of when moving a company file:

  • You can only move a company file within 60 days after signing up to QuickBooks Online.
  • Move your lists instead of your company file if you already set up payroll in QuickBooks Online.
  • Some of your lists and reports won't be converted because of feature differences.

To ensure a smooth transition, ensure your QBDT software is up to date and doesn’t exceed the file size limit

Then, follow these steps to convert your file to QBO:

  1. Sign in as the admin in your company file you need to import.
  2. Go to the Company menu, then select Export Company File to QuickBooks Online.
  3. Click Start your export.

After that, sign in as an admin to your QBO company, then do the following steps below:

  1. From the Choose online company drop-down menu, select the QBO company you want to be replaced by your company file.
  2. Select Continue, then enter Agree in the text field and select Replace.
  3. Select Yes, go ahead and replace the data, then click Replace.

For additional insights, check out this article: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

Once done, run both profit and loss reports for your QBDT and QBO accounts to check that the import process is successful.
