Freeze when RECORDing

Freeze when hitting RECORD button (or return) to record a ledger entry in QuickBooks for Mac 2020.

Just updated to Catalina. Have updated QuickBooks. 2018 iMac 27".

Worked OK for a while. Worked after force quit & reopening. Now, even that doesn't work.

Freeze when RECORDing

Let's get this working, @BasicDave

It's good to hear that you've updated your system requirement to Catalina and the program itself.

Your company file may be damaged. That could be the reason QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac 2020 is freezing when recording a ledger entry.

To help fix this, let's run the Verify and Rebuild Data utilities.

The first tool scans your company file for any errors or data damage. I'll guide you how.

  1. Go to File from the top menu.
  2. Select Utilities.
  3. Choose Verify Data and tap OK to close all windows.
  4. If you see “Your data has failed the integrity check”,  you'll need to rebuild your file. If there are no problems with your data, you’re done.

The second tool fixes any errors you've found after performing the steps above. Here's how:

  1. Go to File from the top menu.
  2. Select Utilities.
  3. Choose Rebuild Data and tap OK.
  4. Click OK to create a backup to prevent data loss along the process.
  5. Once the rebuild's finished, select OK.

For the detailed instructions, check out this article: Verify And Rebuild Data

If the same thing happens, I'd suggest using the QuickBooks File Doctor to repair your company file. For more information, see Solution 2 through this article: Fix Data Damage

You can also uninstall and reinstall QBDT for Mac 2020 to help resolve this if the issue persists.

Lastly, you can go to pages 48 - 55 in this PDF file to help you efficiently manage your ledger/register: 2020 User Guide. It also contains more details about the other tasks you can perform in the program.

Leave a comment below if you have follow-up concerns about recording entries or other inquiries. I'll be around to help. Take care.
