Hi there, @andy-jt53-gmail-.
It would be my pleasure to provide detailed instructions on how to convert a QuickBooks Mac Desktop file to QuickBooks Online. First, you'll need to update your previous company data using a supported Desktop version before migrating.
You can try our trial version for the process. Be sure to install it on Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or higher. You may check out our system requirements.
After installing the trial version, you can now restore the file. Before doing that, I'd recommend creating a backup of your company file so you can restore it easily.
Here's how:
For more details, check out this article: Restore your backup company file for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
After that, you now import export that data to QBO. Please follow the steps below.

Hello and thank you for your post. Today I logged into my new QB online ,from my 2010 Macbook with 10.9.5 OS Maverick and there was only data and entries form 2008! I am devistated and depressed to see all my data missing and out of date! Now I feel like a lost soul in a wilderness. OMG I will now log in from my new 2020 MBP computer and try to follow your instructions, but I fear the 2009 QB version will not even open on the new MBP and there will be the same data from 2008 in the online data. totally disappointed and distressed over all this.
