Is there a report I can use to compare multiple years actual income and expenses?

Hi @useraimeesapp,

Welcome to the Community. I'm here to share some information about how you can compare multiple years of income and expenses in QuickBooks.

You can run the Profit and Loss report to acquire the data you need in the system. There's an option to filter the details and show them separately on each year.

Here's how:

  1. On the left navigation, click Reports.
  2. Scroll down and select Profit and Loss.
  3. Click Customize.
  4. Filter the date range.
  5. Under Columns, choose Fiscal Years or Calendar Years
  6. Hit Run report.
  7. View the report.

For additional reference, you can use the following article to learn more about how you can personalize reports in QuickBooks: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online.

Leave a comment below if you have other concerns regarding running the report. The Community and I will be around to help you.

The only P&L report I have is a P&L by tag group.

This is strange, @useraimeesapp

I want to verify you are logged into your account as the Admin or have the correct permissions to run this P&L report.

If you do, we'll want to try some browser troubleshooting to ensure the issue you're seeing isn't due to your browser.

As you start basic troubleshooting, try the following:

  1. Restart your browser.
  2. Clear your browser's cache.
  3. Add Intuit as a trusted site.
  4. To have the best and most secure experience with Tsheets, use a supported, up-to-date browser.
  5. Lastly, try this in an incognito browser.

I'd love to know if any of these resolve the issue you are seeing. Please reach back out if this persists, and we can take a look at other options to move forward.  If you can provide screenshots of what you're seeing, that would be helpful in diagnosing the issue.  Take care!

Is there a report I can use to compare multiple years actual income and expenses?

This may work in the online version, but I asked about the desktop version (QB Desktop Pro 2020).

The options you say to select to get a multiyear comparison do not seem  to exist in the Desktop version.

Is there a way to do this in the version of QB that I have and if there is, how do I do it?

Is there a report I can use to compare multiple years actual income and expenses?

Adding to my prior comment

If I select say 1/1/2019 to 12/31/21, I get only 1 column displaying the amounts for the 3-year period.  When I use the P&L Previous Year Comparison Report, I have no option of selecting even which year I want to compare to, much less multiple years.

So, please help.

Hello, Haley.

I have a way to help you see the yearly comparison on the Profit & Loss report in QuickBooks Desktop.

On the Profit & Loss Prev Year Comparison report, you'll want to set the column to Year under the Show Columns drop-down menu.

This will separate the columns by year and let you see the data under a specific year range. Here's what it looks like:

Another report you can run is the Profit & Loss YTD Comparison report. Simply set a date range, then select Year for the Show Columns drop-down menu.

Take note that QuickBooks Desktop will always show the year chronologically, so we're unable to specify the year you want to compare the data to.

Though, you can run separate reports for the years you want to compare. Alternatively, export the report to Excel then remove the columns (years) you don't need to review:

  1. Click the Excel button, then select Create New Worksheet
  2. Select your options for exporting the report.
  3. Once done, click Export

If you need more help on how to use the reporting features effectively, you can check this article for a guide: Understand reports.

Ready to add or match your bank transactions using the Bank Feeds feature? I'm sure you'll find this article helpful in guiding you: Add and match Bank Feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop.

If you'd like to pull up other reports or see a specific data on them, please let me know. I'll lend a helping hand again and give some guides and details.

Is there a report I can use to compare multiple years actual income and expenses?

Sorry, I forgot to mention.  I use Quickbooks desktop for Mac.  This apparently is different as there is no panel on the left side.

Thanks for getting back to this thread, @frazerloomis

The steps provided by the previous agent are only applicable for QuickBooks Online. I can share with you some steps on how to do this in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

We can run the Profit and Loss report and add some filters to show multiple classes by multiple years.

Here's how:

  1. Select the Reports menu.
  2. Choose Report Center.
  3. Double-click the Profit and Loss report.
  4. On the report window, click Customize.
  5. From the customize window, choose the tab you’d like to update.

For more insight, please see this article: Customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac. You can also memorize it to save the changes you made. Once you’re done, simply select Memorize.

Additionally, let me share this link to help easily export reports to Excel from QuickBooks: Export reports as Excel workbooks in QuickBooks Desktop.

Keep me posted if you have other questions about generating and customizing reports in QuickBooks. I'll be happy to help you. Stay safe!

Hi there, @jheinen54.

If you don't, I would like to ask what product you use. Is it QuickBooks Online? Or QuickBooks Desktop? I'd also appreciate it if you could provide me with more details about your concern regarding the option of selecting a year and what specific type of report you try to pull up. You can also attach a screenshot. This way, we could determine the best solution appropriate for you.

Feel free to reply to this post. And if you have any further concerns about QuickBooks-related concerns, don't hesitate to post them here. Stay safe!

I think I figued it out - I am using quickbooks online. I wish there was an easy way to show comparison of Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4 over past 3 years.
