I have used QB since 1999 and use payroll. There has been a struggle for a long time over who is the primary user on the account. (I am the ONLY user.) When I went to opt-out of something recently, I couldn't, because "You don't have permission. Contact the primary..." So after yet another hour with chat/support, they're telling me to change the Intuit ID setting and I am the "primary," just can't do "primary" things. I can't afford to lose 22 years' of QB, so I thought maybe someone here knew if this was a dangerous thing or a normal thing. (I'm not a QB expert. I just know how to use it.)
Does anyone know if changing the "realm ID" is a dangerous thing?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Let me ease your confusion, TTI.
The company realm ID is connected to your Intuit account. Changing it is not dangerous at all. Your data is safe.
However, you can still create a backup copy of your company file so you'll feel comfortable updating your realm ID.
If you have additional questions, don't hesitate to let us know. We're just one comment away. Keep safe!

Well, that worked! (It was scary, as is all accounting to me.) I think the issue is that I bought QB way back in the late 1990s and then upgrades, and a new edition (etc.). Somehow, there must have been 2 versions of my company. This resolved it and thanks for your reassurance.
Wow! That's amazing!
We have been having realm ID problems for a year, and so far have been unable to get anything resolved.
Purchased an existing CPA practice, and the new owner has been unable to get this changed in QBD.
For some reason it is not an issue in QBO.
Different security requirements based on the software package?
Very strange.
Glad you got your issue resolved.

Hello, C Cavnar.
I'd like to take this opportunity to point you to the right direction in resolving the realm ID problems.
QuickBooks Desktop and the Online versions have the same security requirements. The realm ID issue might be caused by something else, so this is something we need to investigate further.
We'd like to take another shot and fix the year-long realm ID issue once and for all. Since this is related to your QuickBooks Desktop CPA practice, you'll want to contact our ProAdvisor support.
Our agents will be able to take a look at your account and see what's going on with the realm ID issue. If you have an existing case with them, you can also give the case number to the next available agent.
If you don't have the phone number handy anymore, our ProAdvisor support's contact details can be found here: ProAdvisor Program Resource Page.
After fixing the issue, do you need help managing your client or the new owner's QuickBooks Desktop data? We have guides that'll help you utilize the accountant tools in QuickBooks Desktop Accountant: Advanced accounting.
If you have any other concerns regarding your practice, the accountant tools and the data in QuickBooks Online or the Desktop version, let me know. I'm here to help you out again.
Thanks for the reply.
I wish it was that easy. As I said, we have been trying to fix this since August 2021. It is now April 2022.
Have taken all steps, and submitted everything asked for by Intuit support, but without success.
Don't know why it is so hard to have the person who owns the practice, and pays the Intuit bills, put in as the Realm owner and the Master & Primary administrator.
We will try again after April 15.
Every since QB started having some payroll functions restricted to only the "Master Administrator" there have been problems. None of these problems exist in QBO.
I've had the same issue for many many years and is causing me to rethink QBOL. Sync issues happening all the time between different software because of realm ID issues. No known solution that I have found.
