I'm taking over as treasurer for a small non-profit organization. The current treasurer has characterized our organization as a for-profit company in QB 2020 Desktop. I prefer to use the non-profit version of QB desktop. How do I convert our organization's data?
Which edition do you have? Pro, Premier or Enterprise?
I can guide you in converting your for-profit company to a non-profit edition, PegMcKee.
We can select the QuickBooks Premier NonProfit. It's the standard version of QuickBooks that costs less and can easily be adapted to suit nonprofit organizations. Customizing it for nonprofit accounting is simple and mainly involves changing a few terms in the menus.
You can follow the steps below to convert your company:
I've included an article that will guide you in managing your non-profit company: Nonprofit Accounting Basics: How to Customize QuickBooks for Your Needs.
If you need additional help in performing the steps, please reach out to me and I'll be sure to get back to assist you.
This isn't working for me. I have QB Premier Plus edition and I would like to switch it to the Non Profit edition. There is no toggle in the file menu.
I understand that you need to switch to a non-profit, MM106.
The Toggle feature is only available to QuickBooks Desktop Premier, QuickBooks Accountant (QBA), Enterprise Solutions Accountant (QBESA), and Quickbooks Enterprise Solutions (QBES).
Also, we're unable to update the business type after setting up the company file. What I can suggest is to change the Income Tax Return Used in QuickBooks Desktop. Please follow these steps:
Please post again here if you have more questions. Wishing you all the best!
Thank you. I did switch the return type from none to 990, even though as a church, there is no return. I do have Premier Plus version of QB Desktop, switching is not included in that version?
It is available in the Premiere Plus version, MM106.
Instead of going to the File menu, I'll share the steps on how you change the industry in the version that you're using. Here's how:

Thank you!!! This worked.
Hi there, MM106.
I'm glad to see we were able to help you out! If you have any other questions, we're just a few clicks away.
Thanks for your time and have a lovely day.
i don't see the toggle option on this 2018 premier edition.
Hi there, bagek007.
I'm glad to see you posting here in QuickBooks Community to assist you with whatever concern you may have.
QuickBooks Desktop Premier, QuickBooks Accountant (QBA), Enterprise Solutions Accountant (QBESA), and Quickbooks Enterprise Solutions (QBES) have the Toggle feature. This enables you to change your QuickBooks Desktop edition from a specific industry to another.
The Toggle to Another Edition option for QuickBooks Desktop Premier or QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions to another edition is located under the Help menu.
For QuickBooks Accountant or QuickBooks Enterprise Accountant to toggle to another edition is located under the File menu.
If you're still unable to see the said option above, please send us a screenshot. This way, we can investigate why the Toggle to Another Edition is missing.

We purchased QuickBooks Desktop Pro.
What we need is the non-profit version of QuickBooks.
How can we do this?
We have QuickBooks Desktop Pro. The steps described to convert from for profit to non-profit do not seem to work.
None of this seems to apply to QuickBooks Desktop Pro.
How do I convert it to non-profit????
Please provide information on how to convert or change to the non-profit version of QuickBooks.
QBD Pro doesn't offer such feature. Consider upgrading to QBD Premier. You can still purchase a one time license of QBD 2021 or 2020 at a lower price.
I re-installed Quickbooks on my desktop to ensure we had the latest updates and now it will not let me select nonprofit as our industry.
We have Quickbooks Premier Plus Nonprofit Edition 2022, but now it says Quickbooks Premier Plus Edition 2022. How do I get it back to the nonprofit edition???
