Buy nowI asked for help through chat and the guy ended up un-reconciling my account back through July. I’m panicking. I know what I did but don’t know how to fix it. I forgot to enter a few bank transfers in between savings and checking. Can I add those? Do I add them during the months they occurred? Then do I re-reconcile each month one at a time? Please help!
Hi TB222,
I got you, and I know the agent who assisted you did the right thing. Did you back up your company file?
Yes, you will want to add missing transactions on the months they occurred. Adding them will change the register's balance and affects your reconciliation. Therefore, it's right to un-reconcile starting from July, but there's another thing that I want to know.
I'm just curious how you were able to reconcile if you have missing transactions. If you added adjustment entries (temporary transactions) to balance your July reconciliation, there's no need to un-reconcile everything. You'd only need to delete the adjustment entries, replace them with the correct transactions, and reconcile them. We call this a special or mini reconciliation. This is much easier compared to re-reconciling everything.
On the other hand, always remember to back up your company file before making changes to your records even if you're making corrections. In this way, you can always go back to where you started in case something is wrong in the process. See about creating and restoring backup files.
Let me know if you have more questions about your reconciliation. Take care and have a great weekend.
Thank you for responding. In regards to your question, when I reconcile, I have to move money around within each account. Being new, I caught a mistake my first month and tried to “fix it” mid month in the bank but didn’t document it properly in quickbooks. I can’t go back and just change it in quickbooks as it is in the bank because it changes the amounts within each account within the MMK. So I have to figure out how to undo my mistake without messing it up. I wish it were as easy as copying exactly what the bank says. I know exactly what I did wrong and it’s one thing but effects two accounts and then the accounts with the account. I’ve rereconciled but every time I think I have one, the other seems to be off. I’ll keep at it.
Thank you
