Welcome to the QuickBooks family, @edarr.

I can get this fixed for you in no time. However, we need more information about the issue to provide the right resolution and to get this sorted out promptly.

Since you've mentioned that you're the only user and the admin in QuickBooks, the error message may be coming from the computer. It could be that your login doesn't have full control or access to the installed application in the system.

I suggest reviewing the user right from your control panel or seek further assistance from an IT guy. While waiting for the details, you can try double-checking your user type within QuickBooks Desktop.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Company tab at the top menu bar.
  2. Hover your mouse to Users.
  3. Select View Users.

I've also included some articles in case you need some ideas about customizing user login and restrictions: QuickBooks Desktop Users and Restrictions.

I am also getting the same message and also am the only user in Desktop Pro 2019.  I always log in as administrator.

I used the steps outlined to confirm I am the only one logged on and that log on is as administrator.

What needs to be done now to address the pop up saying I don't have permissions to update?

You'll want to uninstall and reinstall your QuickBooks, @CTD.

This process will fix company file issues. Let me guide you through how.

To begin with, let's first gather your QuickBooks information.

  1. Download the installer for your version of QuickBooks.
  2. Keep your license number handy. Then, write down your product year and version.

Then, let's uninstall your program. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Windows Start menu, and search for “Control Panel”.
  2. Choose Programs and Features or Uninstall a Program.
  3. Select your QuickBooks Desktop from the list.
  4. Click Uninstall/Change and then Remove.
  5. Hit Next and follow the steps that will guide you through the rest.

After that, install QuickBooks using clean install. Please refer to this article for the detailed steps: Install QuickBooks Desktop.

Once done, open your QuickBooks and check if you're still getting the pop-up. I'm also sharing with you this awesome article about fixing QuickBooks Desktop install errors for additional reference.
