For awhile I have been seeing the pop up that there is a new version of Desktop available (2024). Today, I decided to do the upgrade (I assume its included in the ridiculous yearly charge). When I log into camps.intuit, I just get a blank screen. I have tried two different browsers. So, my question is, do I need to do this upgrade seeing as I am unable to? I have no choice but to continue to pay for QB so, they will get my money either way.
If you don't have any outstanding issue with QBD 2023, you don't have to upgrade to 2024. You can still use QBD 2023 until May 2026 as long as you pay the renewal.
Hi there, SDP.
I'm here to share information about upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) version.
The response to your inquiry will vary based on the version of QBDT you are utilizing. If you are currently using QBDT versions 2021-2023, there is no requirement to upgrade if you prefer not to, as these versions are still supported.
If you are utilizing an older version, you can continue to use it. However, please note that certain services such as QBDT Payroll, Desktop Payments, live technical support, Online Backup, Online Banking, and others will no longer be available to you. Please refer to this article for more information: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy.
If you wish to continue upgrading to a new version, here's how to do it. When a new version of QuickBooks is available, you'll get a message when you open the software. We make it simple for you to upgrade.
If you don't get a prompt to upgrade, change your one time message prompts.
You can get the latest version of QBDT from the QuickBooks Desktop Manager. You can select and install all your QuickBooks products.

It would be nice if we knew all the new things in 2024 over 2023. So far all I can read it upgraded security, which means in English more than one was hacked because of holes in security. Right? or why fix it?

I am using the 2023 Desktop version. Typically, the upgrades do not apply to me as I use very few features. I only have 3 employees. So, I won't rush to upgrade and will use the second solution when I do.
Just got off the phone with a salesperson from QB. Was told my current program QBDT Pro 2021 will no longer be valid as of May 2024. I don't need all the whistles and bells that the new QB have, however, i subscribe to the payroll service updates which renew every year. My "salesperson" just told me that once I upgrade to 2024 desktop pro (at a price of $650) that I will need to pay the "renewal" fee PLUS the payroll service update fee from that point on. Your statement above says that if I own 2021 I don't need to do anything until 2026. I'm confused. I only have 4 employees I am a small business and I have been using QB for over 20 years. They are really getting on my nerves. Thanks
Hi there, Trishia.
I'm here to share some clarification about updating the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) version.
Are you asking about the initial user who left a comment on this thread? If that's the case, the user was actually referring to QBDT 2023 and not QBDT 2021, as mentioned in their comment.
Furthermore, it is accurate that QBDT 2021 will become obsolete after May 31, 2024. As a result, certain services like QBDT Payroll, Desktop Payments, live technical support, Online Backup, Online Banking, and others will no longer be accessible to you. Please refer to this article for more information: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy.
If you desire to proceed with upgrading to a newer version, you can either refer to the detailed steps I previously provided in this thread or consult this article for further guidance: Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, or Enterprise.

You can still use QB Desktop with a non-subscription license. However, you have to use a third-party payroll application as a workaround. If you're using QB Desktop 2021, you only have until May 2024 to make a final decision. QB Desktop with non subscription + third party payroll application OR QB Desktop 2024 + QB Desktop Payroll.
I guess I will have to investigate a third party work around. $1400-1500 a year for the yearly "renewal" and the payroll service renewal is alot of money for a small business with only 4 employees. So sad. I have been a customer of QB since 2001.
Do you use a "third party" work around for payroll? If so, who do you use?
It is expensive. I only have 3 employees and only use the calculations from Quickbooks for payroll. I do not pay through QB. I don't invoice, direct deposit, track inventory, link bank accounts, download or upload anything, etc. I have paid $1280 to date. It will be a bit more by the end of the year due to the monthly cost per employee fee. We have been a customer since the 90's and are very stuck with QB. We used to just pay the license fee every 3 years and an annual payroll fee. That was very appropriate for our usage and needs. There really should be tiered pricing.
You can use a third-party payroll application as a workaround to integrate with QB Desktop or using it as a stand-alone app. One payroll app costs $40/month + $6/employee/month. You can save at least $15/month compared to QB Desktop Payroll. Then you can use QB Desktop with a non-subscription license to lower costs.
What 3rd party software are you using? QBD and QB Time is cumbersome. We have just under 20 employees. Exploring options.
You are using QB Desktop, correct? Contact me in private and we can share a 3rd party payroll app to explore.
We used QB Desktop (and online for that matter - separate small company). Not sure how to contact you privately.

NOt sure how to contact you privately. Sorry.
Clicked on your profile but did not find a way to send you a message. I tried "send a message" and it didn't work. I am currently working with my accountant on a third party solution. Thank you!!

Agreed. The subscription price went up 58% last year. I have 30 years of records on QB so moving to a different piece of software is extremely difficult. We're basically being held hostage.
Convert your data to QB Desktop file format and you can use the trial version to access your historical data for good. Then you can switch to another program and start from scratch to lower your conversion costs.
I agree and I don't like being held hostage.
Hi TrishiaBlee
Try CFS Tax Tools. I have used it when I worked for a CPA in S. Pasadena and continued to use it to print 1099s for over 18 years. They also sell all the forms and envelopes at a great price and offer discounts for early purchases every year (prior to 8/31). User friendly and a great alternative.
We also get the blank screen when we try to enter the camps.intuit site. Both through the website and through QB. We have tried updating our version of QB but cannot access camps (per their instructions to get the update). I have tried getting support repeatedly and each time they tell me to access the update through camps, even after I explain it goes to a blank screen and stops there. NO ONE in customer support seems to know how to help or is willing to do anything beyond tell you to follow the directions and go to camps to update. So I am just using my old version until I can't then I will go back to calling and arguing with them again until they provide me with another way to load destop (because I will not be using the online version).
A bunch of thieves!
I have Quickbooks for 24 years and have never seen such price increases and lack of customer service. Every call to Intuit is a 2 hour tour on how to get abused! They cant answer the simplest questions and conflicting information from the various representatives around the world. I wish I cold change but like a pirate Intuit is holding me hostage! What a shame!
