The general ledger report doesn't show anything. (I can run the BS & P/L report.)

Thanks for bringing your question to the Community, @info24.

I'm here to get you to the bottom of this report issue right away. To clarify, is the General Ledger statement showing accounts but not balances, or is the entire list blank on both sides?

This report includes every transaction that flows through every account in QuickBooks Online (QBO). When ran for an extensive date range, the statement will often crash due to an overload of information. This limitation results from QuickBooks handing more data to your web browser than it can handle.

QBO, like all modern web-based softwares, stores local cache files that keep you from having to load repetitive information and images each time you log in. This is done to save time and expedite your browsing. These files can often become outdated or corrupted and need occasional clearing to ensure optimal performance. Your report issues could be a result of this, so follow the steps in the link below corresponding to the browser you're using:

Clearing temporary internet files

Once you've cleared these files, run the report again for a shorter period to make sure it's working:

Running the General Ledger report

  1. From QuickBooks Online, navigate to the Reports tab.
  2. Search for Ledger, and select General Ledger report from the pane below.
  3. Under Report period at the top, start with a small range like Last week or Last month.

Check out this quick video demonstration in which I load the report for last month:

With these instructions, you'll have that General Ledger loading properly in no time. Please don't hesitate to keep in touch with me here should you have any additional questions or concerns. Thanks for reaching out, wishing you a wonderful rest of your day.

The report will not run.  I see the same problem was happening last year

We'll check to see why the General Ledger report is not running on your end, Q-BnotWorking.

We'll see if this has something to do with the browser you use. Browsers have caches that temporarily saves your browsing data. When it's full, you could experience unusual behaviors in QuickBooks like non-loading pages, unresponsive buttons, etc.

To start, please sign in to QuickBooks in a private window. This stops the cache from saving new data and makes your browser work like in a fresh state. If you can run the report, you can go back to your regular browser and clear its cache. If you can't, you'll want to remove the Intuit - specific cookies in the browser. You can also try other browsers to isolate the case.

Please let us know how the steps work for you.

Same thing for us today, General ledger report not loading. Just a blank screen. I don't think my computer cache could be the problem. My computer is only a week old.  Other reports run fine.

Thanks for following on this thread, tmbcpa.

To identify why the General Ledger will not load, I’ll have to access the company file to check the report. I’m unable to perform this process without asking your personal data.

We truly value the security of your account, so I recommend reaching out to our QBO Care Team. One of our support specialists can use tools like screen sharing and double-check where the issue is stemming from.

Once identified, they’ll walk you through the steps on how to fix the issue. Let me provide the steps to contact our support team:

  1. Go to the Help icon at the top to select the Contact Us link.
  2. This will open another window where you can enter the issue/topic.
  3. Once done, click on the Let’s talk button to view the support information.
  4. Choose how you want to contact our QBO Care Team: Message an agent or Get a callback.

For future reference, the following articles provide an overview of how to fix when the statement is too large to open or will not show any information.

Let me know if there's anything else you need. I’m here to help and make sure you’re taken care of. Have a good one.

It is not specific to a particular company, I suspect. I am working on two companies currently, and cannot generate General Ledger reports yet all. The screen is blank. When will this be taken care of?

We can perform some troubleshooting steps so that you can generate the General Ledger report, BHH.

Web browsers save cookies as files to your hard drive. They’re small in size, but over time, you can accumulate a lot of them. This volume means your web browser must use more and more power to properly load saved web pages, which may cause unusual behaviors in QuickBooks.

We can start by using a private window to access your QuickBooks Online account. This will help us isolate the issue because this mode will not save site data. Check out the shortcut keys below:

  • Windows, Linux, or Chrome OS: Press Ctrl + Shift + N.
  • Mac: Hold ⌘ + Shift + N.
  • Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer: Hit Ctrl + Shift + P.

Once done, let's try to access the report. If it's running seamlessly, we'll have to go back to your regular browser and clear the cache to delete the accumulated junk files.

If you still encounter the same issue, we can use other supported browsers. It could be that the one you're currently using right now has a temporary problem with QBO.

Let me know how the steps go in the comment section, as I want to ensure that you can access your payroll forms.

Hi there,

Was there ever a solution provided for this issue? Not only can't I run a GL but if I try to drill down on any account detail from TB, BS or P&L, nothing. It's extremely frustrating. I cleared the cache, no change. Please advise.

Hi Jonnyoru9199,

I appreciate your time and effort in performing the troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue.

We haven't received any reports on this. You'll want to make sure that you've provided the correct report period so it would display the information.

However, if the General Ledger report isn't still showing anything, I suggest contacting our support team to help you find out why is this happening. They have the tools to check if there are other users who are experiencing this issue and if there's a need to investigate this further.

Here's how to reach them:

  1. Sign into your account.
  2. Click Help on the upper right corner.
  3. Select Contact Us.
  4. Type your concerns.
  5. Click Let's talk.
  6. Select Get a callback.

I have included this article in case you want to change how you want your report to look like: Customize Reports.

If you ever have any questions in your mind about QuickBooks, let me know so I can help you.

Help feature isn't working either. Can I bill Intuit for my lost time for using this product?

We don't want you to feel this inconvenience, @Jonnyoru9199.

We want to ensure you'll get the best service while also ensuring you'll get the help needed on time. You'll want to consider following the steps shared by my colleague, @KlentB, above before contacting our Customer Care Team via the Help menu.

With their tools, someone from there can create a new case ID associated with your account to be submitted to our engineering team for further investigation.

I'm also adding a reference here for ideas about your report data and other related tasks: Reports and Accounting.
