Can't Log into my Company File on Mac

I have been using quickbooks for months with no problem.

Then the day before yesterday, I went to log into my company file and I can't. I can launch Quickbooks and I can open a Sample Company File but I can't open my company file. After I put in my password I get the crash center little thing and then the "Quickbooks quit unexpectedly" from my Mac. I did the troubleshooting steps, I updated to the latest version of Quickbooks, I restarted my computer, I tried to restore from the last backup and nothing happened. I saw somewhere that a company file should be at least 7mb big and mine is like 6.2 or something like that so I guess that might be the problem but I don't know how to fix it.

I need to get it my Quickbooks like yesterday, I'm trying to get ready for the Holiday season!

Thanks!

Try removing the preferences file:

1. Quit QuickBooks if it is running

2. In the Finder, hold the option key down and choose Go->Library menu

3. The library window opens. Double click on the Preferences folder.

4. Drag the com.intuit.quickbooks20xx.plist file to the trash (where xx is the year of the QuickBooks version)

5. Relaunch QuickBooks

Did that fix it?

Can't Log into my Company File on Mac

I was in Quickbooks when suddenly my company file just disappeared. I did a search on my hard drive and cannot find the file at all? I tried throwing away the Preferences but it didn't work. I then used a Data Rescue software to find the file and it didn't show up in my search. Any thoughts?

The company file is just a regular data file on your hard drive. It would only disappear if it no longer was accessible in the file system. Typical situations of this would be if the file was on an external drive of some kind (USB stick, network mount, external hard drive) and the other media was removed/disconnected. A much less likely situation is that your hard drive is experiencing problems - bad sectors, failed media, some virus messing up the permissions, etc. and thus making the file no longer accessible.

You have you can search for the file in the FInder's Spotlight. What to search for depends on the version of QuickBooks. For QuickBooks 2016 search for .qb2016 For 2015 search for .qb2015. Etc. That should show you the file if it is on your hard drive, in a place Spotlight searches, and if your Spotlight search indices are working correctly.

By default QuickBooks places a new file in the user's Documents folder. If you didn't specify a different location the file should be in there.

Finally, you should never run QuickBooks without having it automatically create backups on exit. We tried to force people to backup by defaulting that to be "On" and requiring them to specify a location. The best location is an external cloud "drive" like iCloud. That way your data isn't just on your fallible hard drive but also stored on Apple's servers.

If you have backups on you can go pull the latest one and proceed from there.

Hold down the option key and double click on the QuickBooks application. That loads QuickBooks without opening your company file. Try opening the Sample Product company file. Does it open?

Yes I can open Sample Product company and the company file of other company (can we tell company x) I manage.
I tried to open the backup for the company that I have error (company y) but does not open (tried with different backups for this company y and open the crash quickbooks report)

The QB application is "signed" and can't be modified. So replacing it won't change anything. Sharing a folder from one machine to another is not a good way to use QuickBooks. The files are data bases and the shared file protocol isn't up to the task of facilitating data base access. You should always keep the company file local to the machine - on its own attached hard drive. If the one that is crashing is trying to access it over a network that is likely the issue and is a risky thing to do regardless.

If you need to share files among multiple machines use the QuickBooks Server application.

It is probably the preference files - you should try that again. But to be sure if you aren't running 2016 try downloading 2016 and trying it. You can download a free trial of it from www.qblittlesquare.com. If 2016 will open the file then the issue is likely those preference files. You can either clear them out or upgrade to 2016. Please note that if you do open it in 2016 it will be an upgraded file - don't use it unless you are wiling to purchase 2016.

Re "If you need to share files among multiple machines use the QuickBooks Server application," is there a QB Server application for Mac users?

QuickBooks Server application is also applicable for Mac users, kgardner.

There are things you need to do or consider when setting up a multi-user environment.

 1. You must have a multiuser licens of QuickBooks.
 2. Install the QuickBooks Server.
 3. Create profiles for the other users and enable the Multi-user mode.

To see the detailed information about these process, you can refer to the answer of my colleague using this link:
https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/other-questions/re-multiuser-remote-access-on-mac-...

You can also visit the Mac 2019 User Guide. Go to pages 26-30 to learn more about the tasks related to QucikBooks Server and the multi-user setup.

Feel free to drop by again if you have additional questions about the process.
