I had set up QB to open without a password (in preferences). However, now QB asks for a password before opening the company file. How do I get rid of that requirement?

I had set up QB to not need a password to open a company file (in preferences) However, suddenly it asks for a password before it allows me to open my company file. How do I change it back so that I don't need a password like before?

If you have any customer credit card info in your company file you are basically stuck with passwords and not just any old passwords bUT complicated ones that have to be changed every 90 days. Yeah, it sucks.

That's the trouble - I do NOT have any customer credit card info in my file and it still happened (on its own!)

Actually I did find one really old customer whose info I had. What if I delete that customer? Would that help in reverting to a non-password QB and how would one do that? Reinstall QB maybe?

If your own FEIN is in that file, that is Private Info that falls under the new Security requirements = Passwords are now required on data files.

One more question... I use a chrome browser that remembers passwords for me...can't QB's be configured to work like that?  I'm the only one using this computer and it's a HOME office.  I'm guessing there are a lot of users like me.  @qbteachmt

"What comprises FEIN?"

Your own Company's Federal Employer ID Number, such as is in the file for purposes of sending and running Payroll.

"I use a chrome browser that remembers passwords for me...can't QB's be configured to work like that?"

This topic is from over 2 years ago. Yes, This Has Changed. You now see the Preferences for "keep me logged in" To as many as 90 days' interval.

"I'm the only one using this computer and it's a HOME office.  I'm guessing there are a lot of users like me.  @qbteachmt"

Yes, I manage Lots of files for other people, as well as my own. We are all suffering from Internet and other required security changes.

You don't want to uninstall and reinstall the QB program to address an issue that is in one company's data file. You cannot delete a customer if there has been activity for that name. You can remove the credit card info, but that might not release the new Security requirement.

I removed the credit card info but no luck! Btw - even if one removes the cc info, the cc expiry date will not go away (?)

We are so small we do not accept credit cards but we still had to create a password.  How do i get rid of it?  I don't want to have to type it everytime I open QB.

Having your own EIN in Company Info is enough to trigger the security requirement.

I don't have customer credit card information and I don't want to have to enter the password every time I open the company file.  Is there a way around this?

The password security requirement is not only limited to customer credit card information, tmick31.

As what @qbteachmt mentioned above, having your company's FEIN will trigger the password security. Not only that, there are at least twelve Personally Identifiable Information (PII) that QuickBooks detects to require a password.

When you have one of these information, then there will be no option to remove the password. The Master Admin will be asked to change the password every 90 days.

The purpose of this is to ensure that the person who will access the file is totally authorized. You can learn more about it here: Password security for QuickBooks Desktop.

Just read through the article and leave a reply if you have questions.

Intuit has to be getting a message on these password comments.  The only bank info I have to protect in my QB is my own bank account; likewise there is no personal 3rd party info.  So the password nonsense is a totally unnecessary and annoying reminder every single time I log on to work on my various businesses/investments, that I truly can't stand this idiotic requirement and it should be OPTIONAL.   Please pass this along to the marketing folks:  How many cars would Honda sell if every time the driver sat down to drive they had to punch in an 8 digit code ... would not matter if it was the best car on the planet.  This is a coding issue and my bet is it can be fixed easily and patched in.  I already have password protection and firewalls, etc...; believe me if somebody gets to my stand-alone system and cracks those codes, they'll get much more useful personal data than my bank account number plugged in to QB.  For pete's sake fix this.

Hello Bill51,

I’ve seen a lot of discussions regarding the password requirement in QuickBooks Desktop. We ee explain to users that we’re protecting your data, and your clients, employees, and vendors as well. I also assume that you’ve already read the articles with explanations as to why we require it.

I’ve answered a similar question two months ago, which I shared the option to Stay Logged-in for 90 days. You might want to consider this one with discretion. Please check this out: https://intuit.me/31whKXm

On the other hand, I’ll let our engineers know about your suggestion about making the password optional.

If there's anything you want to add about the password requirement, feel free to visit us back in the Community.

Go back to older version that's what I did.  There are tools to make files backwards compatible. I went back and every thing works without password.

We're unable to get the password. I can share with you on how to update it, revmrbill2.

Resetting the password in your book can help you update a new one. It is used when you lost, forgot the password for the QuickBooks Desktop Windows computer.

Open QuickBooks Desktop. At the login window, select I forgot my password. Then, fill out the following information on the form for security purposes.

The license number for the version of QuickBooks Desktop you’re using. It will also ask you to your name, email address, phone number, and ZIP code you originally used when you purchased the product.

For the license number, you can press F2 to see what's your license number. And for the other details needed, you can sign in to CAMPS to find all of this information.

Once everything entered correctly, hit OK. Right after, QuickBooks will guide you through creating a new password.

Add a comment if you have other questions about the password requirements.

SarahanC, thank you for your information, but this is what has transpired. I only use QB once a year to make reports from a years worth of data. Last time used was FEB 2019. shortly after that I had hard drive crash, had to reinstall QB program and it was updated during reinstall all went well until i tried to restore company from a QBB file, that is when it asked for Password, well no password was ever set up in old back up, so how could I provide a password? that is where I am, I have a good back up from 2019 trying to get data back into new reinstall and it is asking for an  admin password which was never set up??????  Help!!!!!!!!!!  since this I have removed QB from computer, and think that I have to buy a new copy for QB Nonprofits, but this will probably not work as I have to use the Back ups I have to restore.........

Hi @billscarboro.

Thanks for giving us the details when you tried to access your QuickBooks Desktop. Since you've restored a company from a QBB file without a password set up, have you tried to leave it blank and log in to your desktop? I've tried it once when I launch my QBDT after a long time I wasn't able to use it, and it worked out well.

If the issue persists, follow the steps to use the Automated Password Reset Tool. After you reset your password, restore your backup file again.
