Bank Feeds

My bank feed does not compare to my quickbooks balance anymore?  It used to show both and it was a helpful comparison between reconciliations but now I don't see it?

Bank Feeds

Hi there, lukebhs. I'm here to explain and share some information about the QuickBooks balance and the bank's balance.

The QuickBooks balance is the total of all bank transactions added or matched to the system. The bank balance, on the other hand, is based on the most recent bank feeds update of your bank's actual balance.

There are also several reasons why the balances don't match:

  • Outstanding transactions.
  • New transactions for a connected account.
  • Duplicate transactions.
  • Edited or deleted transactions.
  • Card (liability) account.

Furthermore, you'll need to make sure to categorize and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

I've added this article to help you figure out what you need to do if QuickBooks Online doesn't match your bank statement at the end of a reconciliation: Fix issues for accounts you've reconciled in the past in QuickBooks Online.

Thanks Archie, although i'm still confused.  It's not a matter of the balances not matching, it's that I cannot see both balances for each account like I used to.  See attached....there used to be 2 boxes, now only 1?

I'm here to elaborate on a few details about why you're unable to see your balances, lukebhs.

Thank you for the screenshot. Generally, the zero balance will only show if you've imported your transactions from a CSV file. You can manually update your bank if you're not getting any errors. To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Banking menu, and select Banking.
  2. Select Update.

But if you're getting bank errors, I suggest following the specific troubleshooting steps of each error code found in step 4 of this article: What To Do If You Get Bank Error or Can't Download Transactions In QuickBooks Online.

However, if it's still showing a zero balance  and these aren't imported transactions but you're not getting any error code, you can disconnect and reconnect your bank. Here's how:

To disconnect:

  1. Go to Bookkeeping, select Transactions, then Banking (Take me there).
  2. Select the tile for the bank account.
  3. Select the pencil ✎ icon, then select Edit account info.
  4. Select the Disconnect this account on save checkbox. Note: If QuickBooks is downloading new transactions, you won't see this option. Wait a few minutes for the update to finish and try again.
  5. Select Save and Close.

To reconnect:

  1. Go to the Transactions menu, click Banking.
  2. Select the Link account button and choose Connect to a different bank or Connect a bank.
  3. Enter the name of the website of the financial institution you'd like to reconnect.
  4. Look for the exact bank by using the scroll button.
  5. Input your bank credentials.
  6. Select Connect.

With this, QuickBooks should automatically download the latest bank transaction. You'll just have to make sure to categorize them. For more details on how to add and match, consider checking this out: Categorize and Match Online Bank Transactions In QuickBooks Online.
