Bank reconciliation off. Closing April 2021, but balance off because a check dated May 1, 2021 was cashed early. What do I do?

Welcome aboard to the Community, acarmona0123.

I have the steps to keep your records in tiptop shape. We’ll have to undo your previous reconciliation and then changed the check’s date from May to April. This way, the entry is posted to the correct month.

Before performing the process, I suggest consulting your accountant. They can guide you on how to best handle this situation. If they recommend to undo the reconciliation, here’s how to do it in QBO.

  1. Tap the Accounting menu on the left panel and choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. From the list, pick the bank you’re working on and press the View Register link to see all transactions.
  3. Look for the entries that you wish to unreconcile and perform this one at a time.
  4. Make sure to click on the transaction to expand the line.
  5. Hit R on the Check icon, and it's between the Deposit and Balance columns.undo recon.png
  6. Change the status to C (Cleared) or leave it blank.undo recon.1.png
  7. Hit Save and click Yes to confirm the action.

From there, find the check that was cashed earlier. Next, press the Edit button to view transaction details.

Then, change the date to the correct one. Once done, you can now reconcile the account.

I’m adding an article that provides more insights into the process. It includes solutions on how to fix other reconciliation errors: Undo or remove transactions.

To help review the opening, beginning, and ending balances for the account holding the transaction, see the following links. These resources contain solutions on how to resolve the discrepancy from any of the entries mentioned above.
