Debit transactions for review in QuickBooks Online cannot be categorized because Description is truncated .
Hey @rrqbpro,
Thanks for joining the Community. I'm here to help determine why the Description is appearing truncated.
Just to clarify, are you referring to the Description column appearing cutoff? If so, it's often recommended to try browser troubleshooting when a user encounters unexpected behavior in QuickBooks Online (QBO). One option is to clear your browser's cache, which is stored in order to improve loading times but can interfere with processes when too much is accumulated. You can locate additional information about this at the following link: Delete Or Disable Cache And Temporary Internet Files In Your Web Browser.
Additionally, you may want to try expanding the Description column by placing your pointer on the line next to the column and moving it. The following is a brief video to serve as a visual reference:
This should help to get you on the right track.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let me know. Wishing you well.
Hi I wish it was that simple. We added a checking account from RBank. The descriptions for their debit transactions are very long when viewed on the bank website. But all QBO displays in the Description field is 32 characters, truncating the description before the vendor name is displayed. We can pull out the field length but after 32 characters it is blank.
It shows Signature POS Debit (date) (state) (city). Even if you edit the transaction to view the description in the Memo field, all that is displayed is 32 characters
We could toggle back and forth between the bank website and QBO to find the vendor and categorize the transactions, but we would rather not.
Hi there, rrqbpro.
You may download the CSV file from your bank and remove unnecessary information in the description field. Once done, you can save it and have imported to your QBO account.
Here's an article that you can read about How to Import Bank Transactions Using Excel CSV Files.
Let me know if you need anything else.
Hello Joyce,
We have done that also. But all we get from the bank is the first 32 characters of the Description field. RBank changed their file format in July 2018 and none of the debit transactions after that date contain the full description in either .QBO or .CSV import files. My client spoke to the bank earlier this week. RBank said they have been receiving complaints about this and that Intuit is working on a solution. I do not know if what they say is true, since it has been six months without a resolution. So it appears to be a known issue. Is there any way we can find out if a fix is forthcoming or escalate this issue? If not, I may advise my client to switch banks if Intuit and RBank are not working together on a solution.
Thanks for doing the steps my colleagues provided, rrqbpro.
I suggest contacting QuickBooks Online Customer Care to have this issue investigated further. They have more tools to escalate this issue.

I have made the columns wider but when I print the report the columns are still truncated. and there is plenty of space on the page
Have you tried performing the browser troubleshooting steps, messp?
If not, you can start by printing the report again on a private window. If it works perfectly, the overloaded cache and cookies in your browser might causing the issue.
Regarding this, it’s commonly advised to clear these temporary internet files. Switching to a different browser would also help. Below are the ones supported by QuickBooks:
If none of these will work, it would be best to contact our technical support team. They’ll be able to walk you through performing additional steps needed to fix the issue.
