Neither of the replies were the solution, but it did point me in a general direction, kind of.
On my computer, changing .qfx to .qbo does work. It works for Wells Fargo and Capital One. The problem with the Capital One .qbo not being read by Quickbooks is the code.

You have to download a .qbo file for QuickBooks. .qfx is for Quicken and is different. You can't manually change the file extension - that won't work.
If Capital One doesn't offer a .qbo (QuickBooks Web Connect) download option then the issue is that Capital One doesn't support QuickBooks. If it does offer it then just download that and it should work.
Also... banks occasionally reserve the .qbo file for business accounts and offer the .qfx option for personal accounts. If you are using a personal checking account that may be the issue.

I just upgraded to Mac 2020 and have a similar issue with importing capital one export file in QBO format.
I will be requesting a refund after being online with tech support in India (Always a frustrating experience) for many hours. Going back to 2016 if manually having to do transactions.
how are you exporting qbo format from capital one? i used a converter that converts the pdf downloaded statements into qbo files. I use quickbooks for mac 2016 and i can't import the qbo files. suggestions?
You can import this file to your account using the Web Connect process, @christinej1968.
