[email address removed] is too small when downloading transactions

When I try to download my American Express transactions, I'm getting the error "redNum is too small".

The sequence of events is:

  1. Open "Online Banking".
  2. Click "Download statements from all accounts" button. (I only have one account setup for online banking.)
  3. I am asked for credentials, even though I had previously saved my credentials in my Keychain.
  4. I immediately get the "recNum is too small" error.
  5. I click the OK button.
  6. I get a message the Quickbooks is "Connecting to Intuit to retrieve info about your bank."

That window becomes unresponsive. Also, I cannot quit Quickbooks.

I have Force Quit Quickbooks and Verified Data on this company.

Happy Monday, @PaulCyberEngel.

Connecting to American Express can be a little tricky, but I'm here to help.

If you've recently updated QuickBooks, you'll need to login to the AMEX website outside of QuickBooks to make sure there are no messages that need attention. After you log in to their website, then you'll want to go through the connection steps again to bring in your transactions. This is due to American Express changing their connection process a few updates ago and implementing a new security policy. If you keep hitting a bump in the road, I suggest contacting AMEX to make sure they're not having connection issues on their end with QuickBooks.

Feel free to comment below if you have any other questions. Best wishes!

I am receiving the same message with the same problem with my bank - NOT Amex.  So this issue has nothing to do with just Amex.  My bank hasn't changed anything so what is the problem?

Hi there, @rose lizard.

Thanks for joining in this conversation. As an additional insight, QuickBooks depends on what your bank sent to us.

In an online world, there are times that the communications between QuickBooks and your financial institution may be interrupted. When this happens, we can manually update your connected bank.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Banking menu.
  2. Go to the Banking tab.
  3. Select Update.

Just in case you'll see a message about additional authentication, follow the onscreen steps to continue the update.

Quickbooks Desktop for Mac - error message RecNum is too small - program freezes - QB says it is the bank's fault - the bank says it is QB - bottom line I can no longer connect to my bank - QB shows I am connected, bank says I am not. Worked with techs on both sides all day. I am using a stand-alone 2022 version - non-profit - should legally still connect to the bank. How can this be fixed?

You can utilize the Verify and Rebuild Data feature in your company file. I'd gladly walk you through the steps.

Performing these steps can help determine if there are issues with your company data. Here is how:

  1. Go to File, then select Utilities.
  2. Pick Verify Data, then choose OK to close all windows. If you see “Your data has failed the integrity check” you need to rebuild your file. If there are no problems with your data, you are done.

For detailed information about the steps, please visit this article: Verify and rebuild data in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

Furthermore, you can simply restore your backup company file in QuickBooks for Mac if you created one before you encountered the error.
