How do you change the description of a transaction under the Banking tab? My AT

Hey there, @sharrison1.

Thanks for taking the time to reach out to the Community for support.

When you bring transactions in from the bank, it will automatically fill in the description, because the bank adds that from their side and will populate on yours. That being said, we aren't able to edit these descriptions. I have went ahead and submitted this suggestion to our Product Development Team, so this can be considered in a future update.

However, you can enter a new memo or change the current one. I've included some steps to do this below.

1. From the Banking menu, go to the For Review tab.

2. Click on the transaction and edit the memo.

That's all there is to it. Let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Take care and have a great day!

Ok, thanks for the help. Seems weird though that the only place it says T-Mobile is in QB. I've looked all over the AMEX site and they show it as AT&T too. Either way, hopefully support will add that as an option. It's problematic to have charges showing as if they were paid to a different company.

Thanks for the help.

Bank Tab > Categorized Column > Description

I agree. It can be very confusing when a transaction's official Description provided by a Bank feed (under ''Bank Tab'' > For Review -- or Categorized column) is incorrect, incomplete or misleading. We can only change the Memo description and it's a bit annoying since we don't see the correct info in the Overview of QuickBooks Online.

This is incredibly annoying as all I see are Business, business, business...Sure I can change the memo or the vendor but the main column is description! Please add that feature QBO!!

Hello, NonprofitBA.

Thanks for joining this conversation. Allow me to jump in and help ensure this is taken care of for you.

I can see how having the option to manually change the description of bank transactions in QuickBooks Online (QBO) would be helpful for you and your business. While this isn't available yet, I suggest sending feedback directly to our product developers. They're always looking for ideas to consider on how to improve QBO.

Here's how to submit feedback:

  1. In QBO, go to the Gear (Settings)icon at the top, then click Feedback.
  2. Enter your comments or product suggestions. Then select Next to submit feedback.

In the meantime, you can follow the steps shared by my colleague above (change the memo) as a workaround.

In case you need it, I'll add this article that tackles managing bank transactions in QBO for further guidance: Categorize and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

For more tips and other resources, I recommend visiting our website for future reference: Self-help articles.

Please post again in the Community or leave a comment below if you have more questions about bank transactions or anything else QuickBooks. I'll be more than willing to answer them. Stay safe.

As others have stated, many times the bank imported description does not accurately match the vendor. I could always change this manually in the desktop version. As I have just migrated to QBO, this is now a big issue. I have provided feedback but as a dev myself, I don't see why this is so hard to roll out in the next update? It's just a single field.

I must say this is big miss for QBO being able to decide on the descriptors for bank transactions. I have ADP Wages being imported as Land's End.

So many big misses by QB.  Can't change a person from Vendor to Employee!  This is a huge miss.  We have contract employees that turn into full time Employees all the time. Your solution is to add the person new and change the name.  So the person is in the system 2 times and we have disconnected history.  I can not believe you don't allow description to be changed and nobody should waste there time with suggesting an enhancement... the description issue was logged 3 years ago.   Also when your a business and have over 100 checks that you have to reconcile each month I should be able to set up a rule based on "The Pay to"  As soon as a populate a vendor the classification category should auto populate with my rule.  I spend an enormous amount of wasting time every month poplulating the same classifications for the same companies.  This should be autogenerated and since the bank dosn't know the classification the description shows up just as "Check 3456".   You guys can do better.

Years later something so simple is still a huge issue. I just signed up and dont want something that is supposed to help me keep track of things and make things easier to actually make things more confusing than a simple excel sheet would. You have failed on this. Canceling.

I'm here trialing QBO and i just don't get these companies.  I just spent a few days trying zohobooks and it's the same story, very basic functionality that has been requested in their community forums for YEARS, and the forum's support reps just ignores the request and treats janky workarounds as acceptable solutions.
