Chart of Accounts-Delete?

Hello,

I am curious if there is a way to fully remove/delete accounts from the Chart of Accounts?

I am just now getting setting up in QuickBooks online and was entering some expenses from a credit card to try it out. I now see I did it incorrectly.  It seems ultimately best if I can just start over, as there were only 3 transactions entered and I have not linked any accounts or truly started using QB yet.

Thanks in advance.

Paul

Chart of Accounts-Delete?

Hello, Paul.

Yes, there is! I'd be glad to show you the process in starting all over again in QuickBooks.

Since this is just a recent subscription, you'll want to use the Purge feature. Here's how:

  1. Go to https://c21.qbo.intuit.com/app/homepage (or log in to your QuickBooks Online account).
  2. Replace homepage with purgecompany.
  3. This will direct you to the purge company utility page. Review the effects of purging the data.
  4. Once done, type YES at the bottom of the page.

You can check this article for the steps and reference (expand the If your books are less than 60 days old section): Delete your data and start over in QuickBooks Online.

Aside from starting over, you can also delete those transactions and inactivate the accounts.

Since only three transactions were entered, you'll simply want to delete them. Open the transaction, click the More button then select Delete

For the accounts in your Chart of Accounts, you'll want to inactivate them so they won't be used. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Chart of Accounts page.
  2. Find the account you want to inactivate.
  3. Click the arrow icon under the ACTION column.
  4. Select Make inactive

Note: Doing this won't completely remove the account. This will just inactivate it but you won't be able to use it.

Before entering any transaction, I do recommend checking out our articles for guides and assistance. They'll help you familiarize the processes, the "do's and don't's" when dealing with transactions and data, and more.

I'm always here to offer help. You can count on me if you need assistance setting up your QuickBooks Online account.

Chart of Accounts-Delete?

I have the same question, but for QB Desktop Premier Plus Manufacturing version.  Was just starting to create accounts, now need to completely delete what I have and start over from the pre-suggested COA by industry when I first started - but it's not letting me delete all accounts (no data) or get back to the spot where I picked my industry for starting point when creating COA. Help?

(First time here/using this, not sure how to message you or start new topic - sorry to jump on someone else's issue!)

Chart of Accounts-Delete?

It's my priority to help delete an account in QuickBooks Desktop, @MDMoore73.

You can remove an account if you no longer use it so you can keep your chart of accounts organized. In addition to that, you can only do this if:

  • It doesn’t have subaccounts. If it has subaccounts, you need to delete or move them to another parent account first.
  • You haven’t used it in any transaction or linked it to any item.

To proceed, here's how:

  1. Go to the Lists menu, then choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Right-click on the account that you want to edit.
  3. Click Delete Account, then OK.

If you can’t delete the account, you can make it inactive in your chart of accounts instead. For more information, please see this article: Add, edit, or delete accounts in QuickBooks Desktop.

Moreover, I'll be sharing these link to help manage your accounts in QuickBooks Desktop: Work with the chart of accounts in QuickBooks Desktop.
