Thanks for letting us know about your concern with payroll reports, @colvo.
I tried to generate a Payroll Details report here on my end, and it was readable and have the option to summarize by employee.
Also, when I export this to Excel, it wasn't over 50 columns wide.
The situation you're in can be caused by some browsing-related issues. In this case, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to fix this. There are times that the browser is full of frequently accessed pages, thus causing some unusual responses. Let's log in to your account using a private browser. This mode will not save any history, making it a great place to identify browser issues.
You can use these shortcut keys listed below:
Then, access the Payroll Details report. If it works, go back to your regular browser and clear the cache to delete stored site data and improve the system performance. Also, you can use other supported browsers. It could be that the one you're currently working on has a temporary problem with QuickBooks.
You can also send a screenshot of your report for me to check how it looks like on your end. This way, I can isolate the issue and provide the right steps to fix this.
Furthermore, check some payroll reports you can use to view useful information about your business and employees.

No, I have had no response and no one has helped me. I need to have the old payroll details report back. How can I do this?
Thank you for getting back to us, @colvo.
I want to make sure this concern is taken care of, and I personally want to get this fixed for you.
Going back to your original concern, we haven't received any update about a new format of the payroll reports in QuickBooks Online (QBO). To provide the best resolution needed, can you share a screenshot of your Payroll Detail report so we can check it here further? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.
In the meantime, let's try accessing your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account using a private browser. This way, we can check if it's a browser data issue. Press this shortcut key on your keyboard to open a private browser:
Once logged in, go back and try to run and customize the Payroll Detail report again to double-check. If this works, it means that you need to clear the browser's cache so the system can start fresh. However, if you get the same result while using a private browser, I recommend switching to a different one.
You might want to read this article to know the available payroll reports in QBO and what information it contains: Run payroll reports.
Please know that I'm just a reply away if you need any further assistance running and customizing payroll reports. Have a good day!
I just tried a different browser and got the same report. Here is a snip: This is a snip of my entire screen, I have never seen any report like this until about 2 weeks ago, and it is obviously not condensed enough to be helpful...Why does my report look different than it used to and different than everyone else's? If I print this it is 7 pages long. If I export it to excel - it is 50 columns wide.

Yes - the report you provided images of is the old version I used to have access to and the one I prefer. I do not believe this is a browser issue because I am working at home today off my laptop with the same issue, and my boss also now sees the new, undesirable report when she logs on with her own login credentials and on her own computer as well. Also, I have access to 4 different companies, and only one of them has this new weird report.

Hello,
I suddenly am getting the same (frustrating) report that the original poster is generating through QBO. Is there a solution to restoring the old report that is much more useful?
Thanks!
Hi there, StollyOR.
I'm here to share some insights about the new payroll reports in QuickBooks.
Recently, we've rolled out updates on our payroll reports to help the customers track their business's finances more accurately. Please know that reverting back to a previous report interface is unavailable since the processing and data storage of QBO goes through via Cloud.
I understand that it's not easy to lose a report format that you’ve come to rely on. Let me give you a bit more context on why we made that change and how it will hopefully benefit you and other customers in the long run.
The new Payroll Details report is still readable and very user-friendly. We've also added a Customize button to help manipulate and view useful information about your business and employees. That said, you'll want to select the Totals only option so you can summarize the data by employee.
If still prefer the old version, I encourage sending feedback to our Product Development Team to help improve your experience in QuickBooks. Your ideas and suggestions will surely guide us in creating innovations and changes to our products. When you're ready, here's how to do it.
I'm also adding this article to help track where your business stands in terms of payroll and employee expenses: Run payroll reports.

StollyOR - Since my original post, I have found if you run the "Payroll Summary by Employee", then in the upper right hand side of your screen, (below "export to Excel") you will see hash marks representing columns or rows. If you pick columns - the report is kind of close to what the payroll details report was before. It's at least a much better report than the new details one. Hope this helps!
Thank you for taking the time to share your solution! I greatly appreciate it. It always throws me when things suddenly change within QBO!
I'm having this same issue. I've tried another browser with no success. Also cleared cache...nothing changed.
How can I get those original reports back. The new one have not ability to customize.
Has anyone been able to fix this problem with the new layout of the payroll reports? What used to take 3 pages to print now takes 15...and things are 'wrapped'. I need it back to the old way.
I spent over 2 hours on the phone with QB support and they were not able to help. Tried different browsers, cleared cache dozen times, incognito, etc. still the same.
Any help would be great.
I finally found the answer to this problem. In the first screen shot at the bottom of the page you will see View Payroll reports. Click on these words, then the reports in the format you are looking for will pop up, which is the second screen shot. Click on the Export to Excel and the user friendly familiar Intuit Payroll reports come up in Excel.
