Downloaded bank detail is truncated in QuickBooks Online

Up until a few months ago, all information in "bank details" got downloaded. Now, only the first 30 or so characters are downloaded, making those bank feeds considerably less useful.  The bank detail itself has not changed, only the Quickbooks import. I could manually import the data, but that is considerably more time consuming. Can Quickbooks fix this?

Hello there, rom1.

Are you referring to your bank descriptions? If so, let’s try doing the browser trouble shooting steps. Unusual behaviors in the program can sometimes cause by an over loaded files in your browser.

We can start these steps by downloading the files again through a private window (you can delete the transactions that are already in QuickBooks before downloading them again to avoid duplicate entries).

Here’s how:

•    For Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + N.
•    For Internet Explorer or Firefox, press Ctrl + Shift + P.
•    For Safari, hold down Command + Shift + N.

If they work fine on a private window, I’d recommend clearing your browser’s cache or switching to other browsers.
However, if you’re still having truncated details after trying the steps above, it’d be best to reach out to our support team for further investigation.

Here’s how you can reach them:

  1. In QuickBooks, click Help at the top.
  2. Select Contact us.
  3. Type in your concern under How can we help?
  4. Click Continue.

Visit us again if you have other concerns about QuickBooks.

I reached out to the support team. The has been no resolution to this problem. Disappointing.  It means I have to do extra work.  Exploring alternatives to quickbooks.

This problem also exists in 2018 Desktop Pro. The First 30 or so characters are in the "Downloaded As" and the remaining characters and in the "Bank Memo Field". If Intuit would add the Bank Memo to the Rules it would really help out. But they won't. Stan

Thank you for joining the thread, @SPWsr.

I've checked from our records and haven't found any ongoing investigation about this problem. To isolate the issue, you can start by importing a web connect file and check if the bank details are still truncated to 30 characters. If the same thing happens, I encourage reaching out to our Support Team so a representative can check and review this further.

To contact support:

  1. Click on QuickBooks Help from the Help menu.
  2. Tap on Contact us under the Have a questions? window. If the button doesn't show up, search something on the search field.
  3. Select your QuickBooks product.
  4. Type in a short description of your concern under the What can we help you with? section.
  5. Hit Search.
  6. Choose a way to connect with support under the Here's how to connect with a QuickBooks expert about "a...".

Let me know if you have any other questions by adding a comment below. I'm a few clicks away to help. Have a good day!

I have verified that my bank is provided all the information in the description column in an Excel CVS file.

See the attached file.

I would be happy to show someone this in a support session. I just don't want to spend hours on the phone getting to the point of a support session.

you can contact me and we can schedule a session.

Hey there, @SPWsr

Thanks for following up with us.

In order to get a remote session with an agent, this would require you to contact support using the instructions above by my colleague, as we do not have the tools to do this. We do offer chat support if you wish not to speak with an agent over the phone. Chat support can also provide a remote session to look further into this for you.

Please let me know if you have further questions or concerns. You can always count on us here in the Community to guide you in the right direction. Take care!

Downloaded bank detail is truncated in QuickBooks Online

I am having the same problem (QB Desktop Pro 2020). I followed the above steps, but the "Downloaded As" column of the Bank Feed always cuts off the last part of the description from my bank. The full description exists in my bank and in the Memo section of each line item.

With this truncation, there are many transactions I cannot make rules for because the first many digits of the Downloaded As column are useless placeholders from my bank, and the essential information comes later but is cut off.

I contacted Support through chat about this last week. I was told my options were for the agent (Clifford L, I think, not sure) to email me instructions of what to do. I accepted this option, and I never received any email. :( Prior to that, he said my other options were to pay for remote access support or that I could go to the forums.

Can someone help me disable the truncation of Downloaded As data for Bank Feeds? Thank you! -V

I appreciate you for getting back to us, DocV.

If you have QuickBooks standalone, you'll have to pay for the support plan. However, if you have QuickBooks Online bundle, there's no need to pay for the remote session.

At this time, I recommend reaching out to our Phone Support team. Then, if you have the case number of your interactions with the last representative, you can give that number to the agent you'll be speaking with. This way, you don't need to start from scratch.

I'm just a post-away if there's anything that I can help. Keep safe!

I am also having this issue.  Has there been any resolution for anyone who has reached out to support?  It seems this is not a one-off problem.  I am surprised you are not able to submit a bug/ticket request for this yourself to the dev team.  Seems incredibly inefficient for all of us to individually submit a support ticket.

My issue is on Desktop.  QB Online brings in more than desktop does.  How do you get it to show more spaces.  My bank feeds are useless.  I get one letter in the vendor name and the rest is numbers and dates.

Definitely could use some help here.

I am having the exact same problem with Quickbooks Desktop Pro Plus 2021.  The first half of the description shows in the "Downloaded As" column the the remainder flows over to the "Bank Memo" column.  When I do a Google search it turns out this is a very huge issue however there does not appear to be any viable resolution.  Clearing out the browser resolves nothing.  I am hoping someone has finally come across a resolution because it is frustrating and it basically makes the "rules" useless!

No, there has been no "resolution".

Current workarounds:

1. Check the "Show Bank Memo" (or something similar, I do not have a bank feed currently) near the top middle of the bank feed transactions window. This will show a new column with the full, non-truncated memo. NO, the Rules feature does NOT interact with this column.

2. Someone above posted a link for file conversion software. I have not used such a program. To have to purchase a $100-200 program just to make QuickBooks work, however, is entrepreneurially detestable.

Good luck!

Please, Intuit, fix this very simple issue. Thank you! -V

I too have this problem.  Very frustrating. Forced to update to the latest version to maintain ability to use bank feeds and then bank feed no longer can match to existing rules due to the truncated download column. No reason to Update.  Maybe I should try to get a refund. (QuickBooks user since the late eighties). Please fix this bug ASAP.

I have found a workaround that will work for me. In the latest release of QuickBooks Desktop Pro, bank rules may be linked to the downloaded "memo". The downloaded bank memo field contains all the vendor information that is needed to create and use a rule. You will have to create all new rules but once that is done, the download will work perfectly. Yeah!

Can you point me to where you see the memo field to select for rules? I don't see it. I'm using QB Desktop Pro 2021 with the latest update. I have attached a screenshot. SPW

Thank you for providing us details, SPWsr.

Using the bank memo to set up rules to categorize transactions is a great idea. Currently, we don't have an option for rules in bank feeds.

In the meantime, you can utilize the conditions available to set up your rules such as the description, amount, payee, account, and class.

I've included this article to learn more on how you can manage your bank feed transactions: Add and match Bank Feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop.

You can also check this link to know more about rules for bank feeds.

Just click the reply button below for follow-up questions about banking. I'll keep an eye on your response. Have a great day!

with the 30 char limit (truncating the description) the rules are basically useless.

Did you get it solved? I do not see a way to use memo to setup rules.

This issue renders QB useless to me. Using Sage now. It works!
