How to move a bank register to a different company file?

I accidentally created a bank register under the wrong company file (realized this after I was all done with it) and need to move it under the correct company.    Is there a way to do this or do I need to go to the correct company and recreate the bank register?

I am using quickbooks 2016 pro desktop

How to move a bank register to a different company file?

There's a way to import Chart of Accounts into a company file, smtwtfs.

You can export an IIF file of the Chart of Accounts and import it to the correct one. Here's how:

  1. Go to the File menu and click Utilities.
  2. Select Export and look for List to IIF Files.
  3. Select Chart of Accounts and click OK.

Once exported open the correct company and follow these steps to import the file:

  1. Go to the File menu and click Utilities.
  2. Select Import and click IIF Files.
  3. Look for the file and click Open

Let me also share this article that'll give you more information about exporting and importing list or IIF files in QuickBooks: Export or import Intuit Interchange Format (.IIF) files.

How to move a bank register to a different company file?

Hello, @smtwtfs.

Thanks for the prompt response and letting me know the outcome of the steps given by @JenoP. I’m here to help resolve the error on Line 51 so you can import the file successfully.

This error typically happens when the account type selected on Line 51 is different from the one existing in the Chart of Accounts. You can fix this by following the steps below:

First, check the source of the problem.
1.    Save the IIF file to your computer.
2.    Open the saved IIF file in Microsoft Excel.
3.    Look at Line 51 of the Excel spreadsheet. This provides the account name and type that QuickBooks is expecting.

Then, look at your QuickBooks Chart of Accounts to determine the type of account. Once done, make the corrections by doing one of the following:
•    In QuickBooks, update the type of account to match the expected type.
•    In the Export to QuickBooks section, update the account to match the type of account.

That should do it. Give this a try and let me know how it goes. Post again in the Community if you need anything else, I’m more than happy to help. Take care and have a great day!

How to move a bank register to a different company file?

I ended up removing all lines on the excel except the line with the one I need to export/import.   When I saw it, and I clicked on it, it was empty, no data was transferred over.    So now I have a blank bank account where it should be.    Is there a number I can call to walk me through this correctly?

Use our BRC Transaction Copier  to pull transactions from one QuickBooks company file and import them into another company file.

This does not answer the question. You assume we want to transfer the chart of accounts from an incorrect company file to a correct company file. In fact we want to only transfer the bank register from an incorrect company file to a correct company file.

How to move a bank register to a different company file?

Thank you for pointing that out, @shortib.

I'd like to add some details about moving a bank register to a different company file.

Transferring the list of accounts can be done using the .IIF, however, since a bank register contains different transactions, this won't transfer the data. You'll have to manually enter your transactions to the bank register.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Banking menu and select Use Register.
  2. Select the Account and click OK.
  3. Use the Date column of the register to record the date of the deposit, payment, or transfer.
  4. Once you're done entering the transactions, click the Record button.

For transactions you can import using .IIF, you may refer to this link: Export or import Intuit Interchange Format (.IIF) files.

If you have follow-up questions about this process, you can always get back to me. I want to help however I can. Have a great weekend.

How to move a bank register to a different company file?

Thanks for joining in this thread, @rmp7345. Moving a bank register to a different company file may not transfer all the transactions since it contains different types of transactions.

You'll want to print the bank's registers so you'll have a copy to check what's imported or not. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Lists menu, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Right-click on the bank account, then select QuickReport: [bank account].
  3. Change the date, then click the Print drop-down arrow and select Save As PDF.

Should you see some transactions not imported, enter them manually by following the steps provided by @Anonymous above in his post.

For future reference, read through this article: Restore a backup of your company file. It helps you learn should you decide to move all your data to a new company file.

Let me know if you have additional concerns. We're always delighted to help you some more.

How to move a bank register to a different company file?

This response actually does not SOLVE the issue in question.  The question was how to transfer the register from one company to another.  This suggestion simply transfers the chart of accounts from one company to another.  It does not transfer the register data from one company to another.

Explore IIF to migrate data. If you are not familiar with the format, consider the migration tool I have mentioned earlier

To take that a step further, I need to take my son's business off my Quickbooks and put it onto Quickbooks Online.  Can you advise how to do this??

Hi Swannee.

Thanks for stopping by the QuickBooks Community, if you want to remove your sons business off of desktop and put it on his own QuickBooks Online profile, he'll need to do whats called a portable file upload and purchase a QuickBooks Online subscription. For further information on the topic, I would highly recommend reaching out to our Sales department. here is a link to the QuickBooks website, there you can find the sales team information.

If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to reach out below. thank you for your time and have a nice afternoon.

@Swannee

If you are using any supporting QBD version (i.e 2018-2020), go to menu File > Utilities > Copy Company File for QuickBooks Online. Otherwise, you may open your company file on the trial license of QBD 2020. Make sure you have open a QBO account prior to proceed.

How to move a bank register to a different company file?

This seems to export the entire chart of accounts. Is there a way to select one of the bank accounts from the chart of accounts and just export that one?

I can help you get around with this, MC221.

You can open a quick report of the bank account and export it. Here's how:

  1. Click Lists.
  2. Go to Chart of Accounts.
  3. Choose the bank account, right-click, then select QuickReport.
  4. Click Excel, then select Create New Worksheet.
  5. In the Send Report to Excel window, select Create new worksheet, then click in new workbook.
  6. Click Export

Let me include this blog about Chart of Accounts as a future reference: How to organize your chart of accounts.
