How to undo a bank reconciliation?

I have all the steps to help you undo a bank reconciliation in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @andiie46.

You can undo a reconciled transaction one at a time. If you need to start over, I recommend contacting your accountant. They can reverse the entire reconciliation using their QuickBooks Online Accountant (QBOA). You can invite them by following these steps:

  1. Open your QBO account.
  2. Click the Gear icon in the upper-right of your screen, and choose Manage Users.
  3. From the Accounting Firms tab, click the Invite button.
  4. Enter the accountant's information, then Save.
  5. Let your accountant undo the entire reconciliation.

If you'd rather handle it yourself, follow these steps to undo reconciled transactions individually:

  1. Click the Gear icon in the upper-right of your screen, and choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Find the account and select View register.
  3. To help you focus on this task, filter the register to only include the last 60 days of transactions.

  4. Select the transaction and review the check column. If the transaction is reconciled, you’ll see an “R.”
  5. Keep clicking the box until it's blank. It removes the transaction from the reconciliation.

  6. Hit Save. Then close your register.

How to undo a bank reconciliation?

I followed the instructions to undo reconciliations for the previous mont, 12/2024. My bank register now shows as blank instead of R. But how to I reconcile again? When I go into "Reconcile" it still says I'm reconciled through 12/31/24.

I followed these instructions. Now every entry in my bank register for Dec. 2024 no longer shows "R", it is blank.

How do I re-reconcile? If I go to "reconcile account", it still shows as "reconciled through Dec. 2024.

How to undo a bank reconciliation?

I figured out how to get back to the correct reconcile date. However, my opening balance is wrong. I did not change it. The reconciliation report shows the correct opening balance. What happened and how do I fix it? I've tried following the instructions but I can't change the opening balance. I can only change the ending balance.

No matter what month I enter, it shows the same opening balance, which is incorrrect.

I appreciate the effort you’ve put into resolving this and finding the correct reconciliation date, @Teke1. I will guide you to the Chart of Accounts page to help you with the Opening Balance issue in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

To begin with, if this is the first time you have reconciled your account, the Opening Balance will be your Beginning Balance amount on the reconciliation page. If the balance is incorrect, you can go to the Bank Register to edit the Opening Balance.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Chart of Accounts.
  2. Navigate the account name, then select View register.
  3. In the deposit column, tick the Opening Balance amount.
  4. Once done, click Save.

After that, you can now Reconcile your account. Make sure your Ending Balance matches your bank statement.

However, if this is not the first time you reconciled your account, the Beginning Balance on the Reconciliation page is the Ending Balance of your last reconciliation. If it is still incorrect, you have to undo your prior reconciliation to get the correct Ending Balance in the Reconciliation window.

For seamless and accurate guidance, I highly recommend consulting your accountant, as they have a more in-depth knowledge of the process. Alternatively, you can explore our Live Bookkeeper Expert service. They are experts who handle this type of issue very well, keep your books accurate, and bring your records up to date.
