Let me help you import to Turbo tax, TruckingM.

I can see how important it is to be able to import QuickBooks Online (QBO) data into Turbo Tax. Currently, this feature is unavailable. As an alternative, you can transfer your data to QuickBooks Desktop, and then import it to Turbo Tax.  You'll want to download a QuickBooks Desktop trial version. Then move your data from the Online version to QuickBooks Desktop.

Once done, follow these steps to transfer your data to Turbo Tax Business:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax and go to the File menu.
  2. Select Import.
  3. Click the From Accounting Software.
  4. Select QuickBooks and click Continue.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

To give you more details on this, check out this article for reference: How Do I Import QuickBooks Data Into Turbo Tax Business?

Furthermore, learn how to customize different reports in QBO to ensure you'll get the right data you need. I've got this for you: Customize Reports In QuickBooks Online.

If I can be of any additional assistance with migrating your files, please don't hesitate to add them below. I'll be right here to keep helping.

@TruckingM

You need to convert data to QB Desktop file as the first step.

I've had a similar experience to TruckingM's.  On October 12, 2023 the QuickBooks (QB) sales team redirected me to their QB Online Specialist Chris.  I told him that my primary concern before upgrading to QB Online was the compatibility between QB Online and TurboTax, specifically "Can my 3 QuickBooks Online Company data files be imported into my TurboTax Home & Business software?  He replied absolutely compatible!

Having seen lately some grumbling on the internet to the contrary, such as TruckingM's post, today I spent 5 hours calling multiple QuickBooks & TurboTax departments seeking the actual truth instead of accepting the speculative opinions I had gotten for most of the day.  I still don't know real skinny.

I know there are a lot of us out there in the same boat.  At this point with only 17 days left before filing, if anyone knows of a work-a-round, please share.  Don't want to have to file an extension.

You need to convert data to QB Desktop file as the first step. You can use the trial version of QB Desktop 2021 or a newer one to proceed.

Correct, this is what I had to do, but why??? And the conversion is terrible. It doesn't transfer all the data. Shame on Intuit for forcing this switch to Online from desktop version when this feature is a highly requested option.

Consider switching back to QB Desktop if you still prefer to use TurboTax Desktop for the time being.

Wrong answer for a lot of people 4Gal.  For many, TurboTax Desktop is not a preference but a requirement if you're an S-Corp.

Thanks for this - Do you happen to know how long until TurboTax desktop recognizes the QB desktop version? I downloaded it, all my data is flowing. However, back in TurboTax.. it isn't recognizing QB desktop. I tried closing and re-opening.

Its crazy they dont sync easier..

Hello there, Kathleen.

I recognize how important it is to import your QuickBooks data into your TurboTax desktop. Let me assist you in handling this correctly so you can import them easily.

These are some things to prepare before you import your data:

  • QuickBooks should be installed on the same local drive as TurboTax needs to be registered. It's not recommended to store any of the applications separately.
  • You'll need to run QuickBooks with Administrator access.
  • You'll need to open the .qbw file at least once in single-user mode on the computer used for import.
  • If you're using QuickBooks Mac, you'll need to convert it to Windows type before importing.
  • Ensure to update your QuickBooks data before importing so your books match your tax return.
  • Ensure that you're using QuickBooks 2019 and newer versions to continue importing.

You can check this article to learn more details about importing your QuickBooks data to TurboTax: How do I import QuickBooks into TurboTax Desktop for Windows?

Which QB Desktop year version do you have?

I'm not 100% sure.. i was in the online version, went to settings and chose to download desktop version. In it, there was an option for taxes, but when I clicked, it then opened Chrome back up to login online. Its like stuck in a circle.

As of right now, I've already manually entered my activity into turbotax so i could move forward. I was on the phone with QB support and they weren't sure either. Hopefully someday these things will nicely integrate..

You just need to install the trial version of QBD 2024 for TurboTax to find your company file. You don't need to run QBD 2024 at all.

Allow me to chime in and share some insights regarding this matter, Rrapp.

I know that to import your file to TurboTax, you'll need to use QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), as there is no direct way to import them. After that, you can transfer your data to your TurboTax account. However, 4Gal's solution is correct. You can just simply use the free trial version of QuickBooks Desktop and access the latest version and edition it has. After downloading the Desktop Version, you need to export the data to QBDT and then transfer it to your TurboTax Business Account.

Afterward, you can check this article for the step-by-step guide on importing your Desktop data to Turbo Tax Business: How do I import QuickBooks data into TurboTax Business?

Does this mean that we will HAVE to transfer QBDT --> TurboTax DT? QBDT --> TurboTax Online doesn't work?

I'm trying to transfer data from QBO --> TurboTaxOnline. It seems that it's simply NOT possible. The ONLY feasible way to make it work is QBO --> QBDT --> TurboTax DT?

I am baffled to see how bad this integration is.

You're on the right track, codenamefox, and I genuinely appreciate your efforts in this discussion. It's great to see your commitment to ensuring a smooth data migration process. To facilitate this transition and help you navigate any complexities, I would like to jump into this thread to provide some clarification.

Yes, you'll need to move or transfer your QuickBooks Online (QBO) file to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT)  first. Then, transfer your company file to TurboTax. To start, you can follow the recommendations above to download a trial version of the desktop version. This trial version will enable you to utilize the software without paying for a subscription right away, allowing you to explore its features and functionalities.

Please also note that when you transition from QBO to QBDT, you may observe differences in how your financial records are displayed. These variations occur due to certain
export limitations inherent in the process.

Once you have successfully transferred your company file, you're now able to start the process of importing it into TurboTax Online. To assist you in this process, please refer to the detailed steps outlined below:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax and navigate to the File menu.
  2. Choose Import and click the From Accounting Software.
  3. Select QuickBooks and hit Continue.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

By following these guidelines and staying informed, navigate this process with confidence, codenamefox. If you have any specific questions or need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to ask me in the comments section. I'm here to help you every step of the way.
