How to get a QFX file from my bank into quickbooks?

My bank is no longer providing QBO files, instead when I download my bank transaction data it is a QFX file.  How do I get this information into my Quickbooks? I tried an online converter and when I try to import the new QBO file it just crashes Quickbooks.

.QBO files are required.  There are work arounds to make a .QFX file work but they are unsupported.

How to get a QFX file from my bank into quickbooks?

Hi there, @pc22

Welcome to the Community. Allow me to provide you the workaround in importing a QFX file into QuickBooks Online.

You can use the WebConnect feature. This allows you to download bank transactions from your financial institution and upload them into your QuickBooks. You must download first the transactions from your bank's website and upload it afterwards.

Here's how:

  1. Sign in to your bank's website.
  2. Follow your bank's online process to download your transactions to your computer.
  3. Depending on your bank's available features, choose transactions from specific or multiple accounts, or select a date range for transactions.
  4. Choose a supported file type for the download file.
  5. Make sure that the name of the file you downloaded, and the location you downloaded it to so you can easily find it to upload.

For detailed instruction about this process, please check out this article: How to upload more than 90 days of bank transactions

I'm confident that these resources will assist you with getting your bank transactions imported into QuickBooks.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes, as I want to make sure that these transactions are imported. Have a most pleasant day.

How to get a QFX file from my bank into quickbooks?

This is a completely worthless response. The question is not about how to download web connect supported files. It IS about how to import transactions from financial institutions that ONLY support obsolete QuickBooks formats like IIF and QFX or Excel CSV files . These same institutions usually offer a paid monthly version that does work with QuickBooks.

Please answer the real question. How can users import transactions into QuickBooks from no longer supported by QuickBooks file formats or from csv files?

Nice to see you here, @KenV.

Thanks for adding a reply on this thread and for clarifying the concern. I'm here to provide additional information on how to download bank transactions into QuickBooks.

While my colleague@BettyJaneB provided you with one of the supported file to upload bank transactions, the CSV files is also a great idea if you're using QuickBooks Online.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Banking tab and choose Banking.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow for Update and select File upload.
  3. Select Browse and choose the file you downloaded from your bank.
  4. Click Next.
  5. From the QuickBooks Account drop-down list, select the appropriate bank or credit card account and click Next.
  6. Map the statement fields according to your CSV file format and click Next.
  7. Select the checkboxes of the transactions to import and click Next.
  8. Click Yes to confirm you want to import now.
  9. Once the process completed, select Let's go.

To avoid receiving an error when uploading this file, your CSV file must be formatted correctly. You can look into the following article for the steps: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Banking-and-bank-feeds/How-to-import-bank-transactions-using....

Please note that each bank formats its CSV files differently, so importing a CSV file may not be possible for every financial institution.

If your bank doesn't support CSV files but offers Quicken (QFX), QuickBooks Online (QBO), or Microsoft Money (OFX), you can try to import your data and then upload more than 90 days of bank transactions through Web Connect. You may refer to the above detailed steps provided by my colleague.

On the other hand, if you're using QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, you may import transactions through WebConnect and DirectConnect only. I'll leave you with this article for the steps: https://qblittlesquare.com/2012/04/online-banking-updating-your-register-2/.

You've got this. This information should help you with the importing. Let me know how things go and if you have questions about this info or anything else in QuickBooks. Enjoy your day.

Thanks for looping in, NickPace.

I'm here to help you get the QFX file into QuickBooks Desktop. Let's get started.

The QFX file is also known as a WebConnect file. However, this format is only supported in QuickBooks Online. While in QuickBooks Desktop, the supported format is the .qbo file

You will first need to convert the QFX file into .qbo file to import the transactions into the desktop version.

To download web connect files:

  1. From the QuickBooks File at the top menu bar.
  2. Select Utilities and click Import.
  3. Choose Web Connect Files.
  4. Select the QBO file you saved, then select Open.
  5. When prompted to Select Bank Account, select:
    • Use an existing QuickBooks account if the account you are importing the transactions into is already set up in QuickBooks.
    • Create a new QuickBooks account if the account you are importing the transactions into is not yet in QuickBooks. Type a name.
  6. Select Continue. You should see a dialogue box telling you that the data has been successfully read into QuickBooks. Select OK.
  7. Go to the Bank Feeds Center to review your transactions.

You can get more details in this article: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Banking-and-bank-feeds/Import-web-connect-qbo-files/m-p/1858....

If you need more help with importing bank transactions in QuickBooks Desktop, please let me know. Have a great rest of your day.

How to get a QFX file from my bank into quickbooks?

I had the issue with one of my banks where it offers a quicken (.QFX) file and not quick books (.QBO).  I opened both files with Notepad and saw they used similar tags.  So I just saved the file as a .QBO file and gave it a shot to import.  Seemed to work fine for me.  I think that is also what RoseMarjorieA is saying too.

I would suggest making a back up prior to experimenting with this technique.

Awesome thanks. Works well. Not sure about running bank data through an online convertor. :/ @ Intuit. Could you PLEASE update your flagship program to import simple accounting data from my bank downloads? Please??? After how many... decades? Boneheaded. Quickbooks MAC, Desktop version. and NO I don't want to store may data in your online version, with the funky web based feature set, online latency and cloud security issues it entails. GEEZ.

I had the same problem with CapOne no longer downloading QBO files. My work around was to rename the file removing the .qfx and adding .qbo. It worked perfectly.

I get annoyed at your answers (Quickbooks support) and your fake interest in solving this extremely easy to fix issue on your end that I,and many others, have been asking for for more than 10 years.  The conversion site that I listed above adds one single line tot he qfx file and renamed the file extension.  So your devs can fix this in their sleep. You will never fix it, though, because for some reason it does not help your business in any way.

Intuit doesn't see this as an issue to fix.  They set it up this way on purpose, and they charge banks for the right to create files for QB and Quicken, independently.  Except that QB Online breaks that rule. For some reason that is OK.

For a quick and easy solution to convert OFX and QFX files to QBO files, and one that will also clean up the payees in the OFX file for an easier import into QB, see our BRC OFX Cleaner

RE: Please answer the real question. How can users import transactions into QuickBooks from no longer supported by QuickBooks file formats or from csv files?

To import transactions using older QuickBooks, you can import them using an IIF file.  If your bank offers Excel or CSV download files, you can likely use them with the BRC IIF Transaction Creator .

Thanks Nahawash,

I tried this but it didn't work.  It tells me that QB can't do it and I should contact my financial institution (that is clueless)...any more ideas?

Thanks,

David
