Trying to import .iif file payroll online and getting "Error on line 11: You can't change for type of an account".? The issue is w checks that have more than 9 pay types

Hi there, Christine171.

Thank you for visiting the QuickBooks Community. I'll share how accounts work in QuickBooks Desktop. I also provide troubleshooting steps to ensure you can import your data without errors and achieve your goal smoothly.

Since you've mentioned IIF, it seems you're trying to import payroll data from QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop. Please know that the error you received means the account type of the account you selected on the line is different from what's in your chart of accounts (COA). In this case, I suggest making sure the account indicated in that line have the same type of account that is already in QuickBooks COA.

If the error persists or other messages are found, you will see the number of lists and transactions that failed and were successfully imported. QuickBooks creates a new .IIF file with error information for unsuccessful records, and you then have three options to move forward. You can open this article to learn more about the procedure and how to perform the process: Improved IIF Import in QuickBooks 2019 and later.

If the problem continues to occur, please know that Intuit does not provide technical support for the import and export of IIF files. If you use your IIF file with a third-party program, you can contact the app's technical support for additional assistance in resolving the error. If you created the file on your own, I recommend reaching out an IT professional for more information on how to import your .iif payroll file without issue.

Lastly, you may refer to this article to view some lists and transaction types you can import into QuickBooks: Import and export data in QuickBooks Desktop.

Don't hesitate to add a comment below if you still have concerns related to exporting files in QuickBooks. I'm always around to help, Christine171. Have a great day!

How do you get Quickbooks to launch the Review Now screen? I just get an error message and once you click ok QB just lets me know that it was unsuccessful.

I know it can be challenging when you encounter issues while importing an IIF file, Christine171. I'll provide additional troubleshooting steps to help you sort out this issue.

If you haven't tried running the Verify and Rebuild data tools to get this resolved, we can perform this to verify and resolve the most commonly known data issues within your company file. First, please ensure that your QuickBooks Desktop is up to date. Here's how to verify data:

  1. Navigate to the File menu.
  2. Choose Utilities, then select Verify Data.
  3. Click OK when you see the message, QuickBooks detected no problem with your data.
  4. If Verify finds an issue with your data, you'll be prompted to Rebuild Now or View Errors.
  5. Click Close or View Errors and take note of the specific error message.

Next, here's how to rebuild the data:

  1. Go to the File menu.
  2. Choose Utilities, then select Rebuild Data.
  3. Click OK if you receive a prompt to back up your company file.
  4. Click OK when you get the message, Rebuild has completed and proceed to the next step.
  5. Run Rebuild Data again to make sure there are no errors.

If the issue persists, I recommend contacting our Technical Support Team. I understand that you've already reached out to them. However, it would be best to contact them again. They have the tools to look into your account and verify what caused this issue.

Additionally, check out this article to help you track your payroll and employee expenses in QBDT. This will help you focus on the most essential information to your business: Customize payroll and employee reports.

It'll always be my pleasure to help if you've got other QuickBooks concerns. I'll be here to assist you. Take care!

The data file was fine and didn't need to be rebuilt. I still can import the iif files and Intuit tech support never picks up the phone and placed on hold with no one picking up the call for 2 hours. I think something is going on with tech support within the company.

Thanks for getting back to this thread and giving us an update, @Christine171. I've got the right steps that you need to help accomplish your task in QuickBooks Desktop.

We understand how crucial it is for you to connect with our phone support and resolve this matter. Please know that availability of our agents varies depending on the version of QuickBooks Desktop you're using. If you're using Pro, Premier, or Plus, our agents are available Monday to Friday from 6 AM to 6 PM. For the Enterprise version, they are available 24/7.

Also, our support hours exclude occasional downtime due to system and server maintenance, company events, observed U.S. holidays, and events beyond our control.  For more info, you may check out this article: Contact QuickBooks Desktop support.

With regards to importing your files, we can manually record them inside QuickBooks Desktop. Simply perform a manual payroll to enter your data inside the program. First, let's make sure to enable payroll inside your QuickBooks settings. Here's how:

  1. From the Edit dropdown menu, select Preferences.
  2. Click Payroll & Employees, then select the Company Preferences tab.
  3. In the QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Features section, check the Full payroll and the Manual Payroll boxes.
  4. In the Get payday peace of mind window, click Next and then Activate in the confirmation screen.
  5. Select OK to apply the changes.
  6. Click OK again to exit out of the preferences window.

For additional info, you may check out this article: Set up manual payroll without a subscription in QBDT.

You can also create a regular check to record these files. When it comes to selecting the correct category, I'd recommend reaching out to your accountant to ensure that your recordings are correct. This will help you avoid any potential errors or discrepancies in your financial records.

I'm sure you have other tasks to take care of in QuickBooks Desktop. If you need help managing your sales and customers, you can check the articles here for a guide.

I got your back again if you have other questions or concerns with QuickBooks Desktop. I welcome any replies from you in this thread.

Trying to import .iif file payroll online and getting "Error on line 11: You can't change for type of an account".? The issue is w checks that have more than 9 pay types

I'm getting a similar error these last two times I've tried to import.  When I try to import it says i cannot change the type of account on Line 10. Well then

I have to open it up in excel and manually type in the type of account "EXP" into the reimbursements account line 10.

Why is this error happening now, we did not have problems before I have used this Intuit online all year.

Also we have Quickbooks Pro 2015.  Well I suspect is something going on because Quickbooks no longer supports this version of the program?  But that doesn't really make sense because why did the online Intuit change is the question.

Trying to import .iif file payroll online and getting "Error on line 11: You can't change for type of an account".? The issue is w checks that have more than 9 pay types

I had a similar problem and had to open the file up in Excel and look at the exact line and type in the type of account where it was blank.

Trying to import .iif file payroll online and getting "Error on line 11: You can't change for type of an account".? The issue is w checks that have more than 9 pay types

Thanks for coming here with your concern, smallbusinesser. Let me share information and help you rectify the issue you're having when importing IIF files.

As shared by my colleagues above, the error you're having triggers the account type you're using on that line is different from the accounts used on the Chart of Accounts (COA). That said, you'll want to ensure the type of account entered has the same account type that is already in your COA. For additional insights, you can refer to this guide to help you import and avoid errors: Improved IIF import in QuickBooks 2019 and later.

If the same error persists after reviewing the account type used, you'll want to consider following the troubleshooting steps provided by my colleague, Kevin_C.

If you're still encountering this issue, I recommend contacting our Customer Care Team. It's best to have them as they're able to pull up and review your account. Also, they'd further provide you with the assistance you need in resolving this.

Furthermore, I'm adding this helpful reference to help you modify and manage your IIF files: Export, import, and edit IIF files.

If you require additional assistance or have other QuickBooks concerns, please don't hesitate to leave a reply below. We'll be delighted to help you further. Have a good one!

I purchased 2023 and I am having the same issue...so it's not a version issue.

I can imagine how frustrating it would be, Christine171. Let me make it up to you by helping you with your issue.

The process of creating and importing IIF files isn't supported in QuickBooks. However, I suggest reaching out to an IT professional for assistance.

Interesting response since .iif files are intuit/Quickbooks proprietary files but they aren’t supported?? QB needs data analysts to support their small business clients.

I have figured out that the QB online system has known data issues. It’s as simple as looking at the file in Excel and seeing the error. Apparently it’s a known issue with no resolution at this time. This was confirmed with QB online support. For those reading this response, updating to QB desktop 2023 will not fix your issue since it’s an issue w QB online. I will most likely switch payroll providers since even QB is stating that they don’t support their own proprietary data issues.

For those that want a work around..you have to choose your IIF file with the option to “import it for me and I’ll fix later”. You will still get an error but it will generate a new iif file in downloads. Go back to that new file and import it with the “import it for me..” and it should work.

Interesting response since iif files are a QB/Intuit proprietary file.

For those having the same issues don’t upgrade your QB desktop as it’s not a fix. It’s a QB online data issue. It’s easy to see when you open the file up in Excel. I confirmed after another 5 hour 24 minute call with support that it’s a known issue. I will be switching payroll providers since QB doesn’t support their own proprietary data. ???

For those wanting a work around… import the iif file using the “import it for me. I’ll fix it later”. You will still get an error but QB creates a “new” longer iif file that you can go back and import using the same “import it for me” option and it should work.
