Why is importing past transactions in downloaded CSV file failing?

I'm using QuickBooks Online Self Employed. I've downloaded transactions from the account in CSV format. It contains the Sate, Description, and Amount columns. Multiple attempts to import fails with a message saying "probably our fault".

Why is importing past transactions in downloaded CSV file failing?

It's essential to have a smooth experience when importing past transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE), @vseavello. We can work together to resolve this issue.

The importing process usually fails due to incorrect mapping or formatting in your CSV file. To resolve this, I suggest checking that the data is in the correct format. You have the option to upload CSVs with either a 3-column or 4-column format since these are the only columns that QuickBooks can accommodate and in that specific order.

Once you verified the format, go to the Profile icon and select Imports to import your transactions.

Occasionally, QuickBooks may exhibit unusual behavior due to browser-related issues. In such cases, you can resolve the problem by following some basic troubleshooting procedures.

Let's perform some troubleshooting steps to fix this. It could be that the stored cache and cookies are the reason why you encounter unexpected browser-related crashes.

You can use the following keyboard shortcuts based on your browser:

  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Google Chrome: CTRL + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge: CTRL + Shift + H

If the issue persists return to the regular browser and clear your cache. Alternatively, you can use a different browser to access your QuickBooks Online account.

Additionally, you'll want to check this article for functional reference to prepare for filing your taxes with QuickBooks Self-Employed: QuickBooks Self-Employed annual tax guide.

Lastly, I'm adding this reference to guide you in reviewing and organizing your income and expenses: Categorize transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed. It includes additional steps on how to create and manage category rules.

Why is importing past transactions in downloaded CSV file failing?

Using the private browser in Firefox allowed my to import the CSV transactions. I haven't cleared the cache yet, so I don't know if that will help or not. I'll try that later.

I am adding 2 accounts from a bank along side another account I already have connected at that same bank, but they were all added with the same name. I can't find any account numbers or other details in QB SelfEmployed that will help me decide which account to select when importing downloaded transactions.

Is there some way in QB SelfEmployed web app to help me know which account to select?

Thanks for the detailed information, vseavello. I've got steps that will help you determine which of your bank accounts you can import the transactions to.

So you can determine which of your two bank accounts you want to import the transactions, I suggest editing the name of either one of your banks. Let me guide you through the steps.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then select Manage accounts.
  2. Click the pencil icon of one of your bank accounts to edit.
  3. Ensure to remember the bank balance of that bank account.
  4. Hit Refresh all and X to close the bank account window.

Now, you will know which of your bank accounts you want to import your transactions.

Let me know if you have questions or concerns about importing transactions or other QuickBooks-related tasks by posting here again in the Community. I'll be here to lend a hand.
