How can I import a .QBM file to quickbooks online?

Hi there NWAA2. A .QBM also know as a QuickBooks Portable file is a file type for moving a QuickBooks Desktop file from one computer to another. Unfortunately, QuickBooks Online does not have the functionality to import a .QBM file. The only way to make this happen would be to, open the QuickBooks Portable (.QBM) file in QuickBooks Desktop and export your entire QBDT file to QuickBooks Online. If you aren't sure how to do this, first I'd recommend to read the article on creating and opening QuickBooks portable files. This article will cover everything you need to get the data inside of QuickBooks Desktop.

Once you've completed that, you will need to export the data to QuickBooks Online. To do so, follow these quick steps inside of QuickBooks Desktop:

  1. In QuickBooks Desktop, click Company in the menu and select Export Company File to QuickBooks Online.

  2. Enter your QuickBooks Online login credentials on the QuickBooks Login Screen

  3. Choose whether you want to import your inventory data.

  4. Select the company you want to import the data to in the drop-down list, or choose the Create New Online Company option to create a new one.

  5. Click the Continue button.

  6. Click the OK, Got It button.

  7. You’ll receive an email when the import is complete.

It's advised to not access the QuickBooks Online file while the export is in progress as it can cause data corruption. If you need anything else, just leave a reply below I'll be happy to answer any other questions you may have. Have a great day.

@NWAA2

Should you have 3 QBM files, you will open 3 QBO accounts to migrate the data

https:// quickbooks.grsm.io/us-promo

Should you need to merge the data, do it prior to migrating to QBO.

Glad to have you here in the Community, @alexandrade.

I've got your back on downloading the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) trial version so you can import a .QBM file to your QuickBooks Online (QBO).

When downloading a trial version for QBDT Enterprise, it doesn't require any codes to open. You'll want to make sure you're downloading the correct link. This article will give you the accurate link you can use to download a trial version of QBDT: Download 30-day trials of QuickBooks Desktop.

Once you've successfully downloaded the trial version, you can now proceed with exporting the data from QBDT to your QBO account. You can follow the detailed steps provided by my colleague above. Or check out this article for more guidance: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

Please know you can continue to reach me here with any additional questions. Thanks for coming to the Community, wishing you continued success.

Thanks for joining in this conversation, @MrsJStig. As mentioned by my peer @Mark_R, you can download a trial version of QuickBooks Desktop to import the .QBM to QB Online.

First off, make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements to install QuickBooks. Then, select the link for the version you want to use and save it somewhere you can easily find.

For more insights, check out this article: Download a trial of QuickBooks Desktop.

Once done, follow the steps to move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online

How can I import a .QBM file to quickbooks online?

Hello.  I have a QBM file that was sent to me after I purchased the company.  I wanted to add this company as an additional "new" company which I did.  But the new company has no data in it.  The file is showing up gray when I go to preference, attachments, existing files, so I cant open it.  Maybe I am going about this wrong? I have tried to rebuild the file under utility but since the company is empty there is nothing to rebuild.  I have QB 2016 mac version.

I've got your back, @Olive5.

I'm here to help make sure you can add the portable company file (.qbm) to your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

The QBDT for Mac 2016 is already an unsupported version. Thus, it's the possible reason why you can open the portable company file. However, let's perform these steps so you can restore the file. Here's how:

  1. Go to the File menu, then select Open or Restore Company.
  2. Select Restore a portable file, then choose Next.
  3. Browse to the location where you saved the portable file.
  4. Select the portable file, then choose Open.
  5. Click Next. This will open a Save Company File As window.

After adding the file, you'll have to run the Verify and Rebuild Utility tools again.

If you get the same result, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Support Team. This way, they can further check on this matter and provide additional troubleshooting steps to get this resolved.

Please let me know if you need clarification about this, or there's anything else I can do for you. I'll be standing by for your response, @Olive5.

@Olive5

Afaik, QBD Mac does not support QBM file format. You need to restore it to QBD Windows version and convert it to Mac QBD file format. You also need to know on which year version of QBD Windows this QBM file was created previously.

Makes sense. But right now I don't have access to use QuickBooks Desktop.  I've downloaded it but I need an Activation Key. It's been hard to find where to buy a license for QuickBooks Desktop! Is Intuit phasing it out or something?? Ill be happy to purchase a license for QB Desktop.

Which QB Desktop year version do you need?

You can still purchase QB Desktop 2023 Pro Plus.
