We run QBE and I have a sales person who travels a fair bit and we are looking for a more effective way to enter sales orders. That is primarily what he needs to do. Yes, a laptop, VPN and QBE on the laptop taking forever to load is the worst case scenario, but is there not a better way? An app of some sort that allows some basic functions. From what I can see, everything is still driven around QBO which maybe someday will support the other manufacturing functions we need, but does not work for us now. Any ideas?
Hello, Ed.
I get where you’re coming from. Having an employee on the go and needing a better way to handle sales orders can be a challenge. Let’s explore some options that will make it a whole lot easier for both you and your traveling salesperson.
First, consider exploring third-party apps designed to integrate with QuickBooks Enterprise for handling sales orders. These applications provide remote access and sync seamlessly with QBE, allowing your salesperson to enter orders on the go. You can find several excellent suggestions through this link: Apps for QuickBooks Desktop.
Additionally, you can opt for QuickBooks Desktop Cloud Hosting powered by Right Networks. This service utilizes high-performance servers to ensure faster load times and minimal lag, allowing your salesperson to enter sales orders smoothly from anywhere – on the road, meeting clients, or at home. It also includes a 90-day rolling backup system stored in multiple locations, so your data is always protected.
Right Networks enables your salesperson to seamlessly access essential tools such as Microsoft Office and Google Chrome through their Deluxe subscription and supports any app via the QuickBooks web connector with the Core plan, significantly enhancing productivity. Lastly, on the topic of QBO, it’s fantastic that you’re considering a future transition! QuickBooks Online is continually evolving and might soon support the enhanced manufacturing functionalities you need. Currently, QuickBooks Online does support creating and managing sales orders. For more detailed information, you can check out this article: Create and manage sales orders in QuickBooks Online.
For future reference, here’s another valuable resource that can help streamline your customer transaction processes, making it easier to manage sales orders and related tasks within QBE: Get started with customer transaction workflows in QuickBooks Desktop.
Feel free to return to the thread anytime if you need more assistance in optimizing your current systems. I’ll be glad to dive deeper into solutions to transform the way your salesperson handles sales orders on the road. Cheers!
Yes, a laptop, VPN and QBE.
What VPN solution do you have? You should try a different VPN solution with a 3rd party solution. Otherwise, consider switching to QB Online + a 3rd party manufacturing app with the sales order feature.
Yes, it is super slow over VPN due to the company file size. QBE is not optimized for WAN use by any stretch. Looks like the plan is going to be to set up a PC here to host RDP and then VPN and RDP on the mac laptop the sales rep has to connect to QB running locally here.
LOL, you really don't know anything about QB do you? You can host on the fastest server in the world with a TB fiber internet connection and it does not matter. The desktop app downloads a TON of data locally and the performance is limited by the slowest factor. In this case it would be the wifi connection of the sales rep in the field. This is why we desperate need a thin client to run as an app, on a phone or tablet.

How big is the file size? Run the Condense Data utility and keep the file size around 500 MB to maintain optimal performance.
Yes, file is about 1gb. We do a LOT of transactions and data. It is routinely condensed.
If you are using a notebook as the host, don't use a light weight notebook or an ultra portable one. You need a gaming notebook with a powerful processor and high memory.
It is hosted on a dedicated HP Proliant Server with two very fast processors, 256gb or RAM, SSD RAID array, etc. The problem is the connectivity speed when you are on a laptop over wifi in a cafe traveling.
You should explore using Starlink.
Starlink is awesome. One of my employees was an early adopter for his house. That said, it does not work inside a building and is not something that you would lug around in your laptop bag. Plus the service with travel coverage is quite expensive.
