Background: I do IT support for a real estate office in NJ. They are using QB desktop 2015 pro. From what I understand their needs are pretty simple and this version has met all their needs, so they haven't upgraded it to a newer version.
For this year, they will need to generate 1099-NEC's for all their agents. The bookkeeper has always generated the 1099's from QB in the past but she's under the impression that this new form isn't available in our older version of QB. She doesn't do payroll through QB, and I don't think our version supports payroll - but she's always been able to generate the 1099s each January.
So - here's my questions:
Thanks in advance!
Let me share some details about 1099-NEC, paulgraz.
The 1099-NEC is only available in the supported versions of QuickBooks Desktop. These are the QuickBooks 2021, 2020, 2019, and 2018.
Also, the 1099-NEC is available in QuickBooks Online. For more details, please check these links:
We can easily import your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online. Since you're using an outdated QuickBooks, you'll need to install the trial version and convert the file from there.
You can check the detailed steps here: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.
In addition, please note that there are limitations when you move from QuickBooks Desktop to the online version. Run a profit and loss report from both versions to make sure the conversion is successful.
I'm here to help you if you have additional questions. Keep your posts coming.

Just want to clarify this - because we'll be attempting this today.
Install the trial version right over QB2015? Or would it be better to install the trial version on another PC and import the data in for conversion?
We are signed up for online (Essentials) and are hoping to get this all up and running ASAP. I'm hoping the bookkeeper wont have a steep learning curve from QB2015. Thanks for your help so far!

OK, I just want to clarify - install the trial version right over QB2015? Or does it install in parallel? Or would it be better to install the trial version on a separate PC?
We've signed up for QB Online (Essentials) and we're hoping to get this transition completed ASAP. I hope the bookkeeper wont have too steep of a learning curve! Thanks for your help so far!
I want to share some more insights about this concern, @paulgraz,
Installing the trial version to the same PC that has 2015 might cause issues. This is because, outdated versions of QuickBooks has different system requirements than the newer editions.
Parallel installments work well with accountant versions but not for standalone. It is safe to use a different PC to avoid any data loss or compatibility issues.
If you have a back up copy for you QuickBooks 2015 version, you can upgrade it to an edition that is 3 years higher. For example, you can restore a 2015 back up to a 2018 version. You cannot skip this process and jump directly to the newest versions, it has to be done in hierarchy.
Then from 2018 to the trial version so you can export the desktop data into QuickBooks Online.
For the steps to restore the file and how to move your company to QBO, use these listed on this articles:

So is it possible to download a 2018 trial version? All I see is the 2021 trial.
I appreciate your quick response, @paulgraz.
I want to make sure this is taken care of, and I'd like to redirect you to the best support group available to get this address right away.
Since we don't have the option to download the 2018 trial version, I suggest reaching out to our QuickBooks Support Team. This way, they can help upgrade your 2015 version of QuickBooks Desktop to the latest version. Then, move your company file to your new QuickBooks Online account and process the 1099-NEC from there.
To reach them, you can follow the detailed steps shared by my peer Jen_D above.
I'm also adding this article to learn how to prepare and file your 1099-NEC through QuickBooks Online:
Please know you can continue to reach me here with any additional questions. Thanks for coming to the Community, wishing you continued success.
Thanks to all of you for the help so far. In the interest of expediency, I went ahead and loaded QB 2021 onto a separate PC, imported the backup file from QB 2015, and it seemed to work OK. Then we followed the steps to export it all to QBO. So far it all seems to be OK.
That was when the bookkeeper asks me "How do I import IFF files in"? I did a quick search and saw a post that mentioned the need for a 3rd party app???
As I mentioned above, this is a real estate office, and all their transactions get pulled into QB by importing IFF files (there's one IFF file per transaction). Can anyone shed any light on how we proceed from here?
Thanks (again) for your support.
Hello @paulgraz,
As of the moment, there isn't an integrated way to import an IIF file in QuickBooks Online. You're on the right track, you can integrate one of our third-party apps to accomplish this. Let me show you how.
Additionally, I've got you this helpful article for guidance in preparation for the 2020 tax season: QuickBooks Online Year-end Checklist.
If there's anything else that I can help you with, please let me know by leaving any comments below. I'll be here to lend a hand.
I want to thank everyone who responded and helped me through this. But it's become clear that moving to QBO is just too costly and difficult. The advantages of having a cloud based solution just do not outweigh the disadvantages and extra expense. We'll be updating our QB desktop instead.
I have to say that I am very surprised that you would build a platform that's not compatible with the IIF format that Intuit created and that so many people use. Having to pay for a third party app to import an Intuit format file into an Intuit product just seems very strange. In a year when these small businesses are struggling financially, this is not the time to increase their expenses. Perhaps in the future we'll reconsider this, but at this time, it just doesn't make sense for us.
Hello @paulgraz, I am so glad that you received so much love and support here in the Community about upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop.
I understand how hard it is right now, with the current state of the world, to have to pay for add-ons and extras to get to your end goal.
I do suggest, as both @Jen_D & @Mark_R mentioned above, reaching out to Support to see if there is anything they can assist you with in regards to upgrading your account.
I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day, and please don't hesitate to reach back out if you need anything else :)
