edit self-employment company name

We used to own an S Corp, but closed that business, and my husband became self-employed.  I used Quickbooks 2021 Pro to track his business and two other LLC's.

When first updating our company file to account for the self-employment, we had a FEIN and a payroll subscription, so that I could readily edit our company name in My Company.  But after becoming self-employed (and no longer needing Quickbooks Enhanced Payroll), I edited the company name, and made a typo I didn't notice for some time.

I subsequently found out I couldn't correct the typo in My Company because that option is "grayed out" due to our lack of a FEIN.  I keep getting an error message that a Federal ID is required.

I tried getting help from Intuit (I have a case number) when I had an older version of Quickbooks.  They said if I upgraded, the problem would be corrected.  I've since done just that, but the problem still exists.  I emailed Intuit at [email address removed] (and need help preparing their Payroll Entity Change form), but received no response, and this was months ago.

If anyone knows how to work around this issue, or if someone at Intuit reads this query, I'd still really like to correct that typo.  I would have appreciated their replying to my email.  Thanks so much for your help.

Is it possible that it is requiring an EIN because of the former payroll subscription?   Try this: under Edit>Preferences>Payroll & Employees>Company Preferences click the "No payroll" radio button and see if that allows you to change the company name under "My Company".

Great suggestion, but unfortunately, this didn't work, either.  I did exactly what you suggested, but got the message that "The Intuit Payroll Service requires your Federal Employer ID."

I tried contacting Intuit's "entity change" unit about this by email nine months ago, and cited my case number in the subject line, but received a note asking for more time to respond.  Then nothing.

However, I am now awaiting a callback from Support, and hope to finally begin resolving this issue.

The issue is *finally* resolved.

The problem was that while I allowed my payroll subscription to expire after closing our S Corp, Quickbooks still "saw" an active payroll subscription, and therefore required an EIN.

A payroll manager eventually came on the line and shared my screen.  He eventually had me enter a code and check the option to remove all links to any payroll subscription in my copy of Quickbooks.  Once that was done, I was finally able to correct the typo in our sole proprietor company name.  I greatly appreciated his help.

Prior to the manager's involvement, the rep was telling me I had to contact IRS to get an EIN, etc, which alarmed me to the point of asking for a manager.  If I hadn't gotten the manager's help, I would have given up trying to correct the problem forever.  It was nearly two hours of incredible frustration, and I apologized to the rep and her manager for my patience wearing thin.
