I want to know if Quickbooks automatically files the mw506 forms needed for Employee withholding and can direct transfer the withholding $Money amount to the state of maryland. In an automated way through Quickbooks Payroll using ach transfer.
Is quickbooks sophisticated enough to do this?
Please let me know the limitations of automating this
Thanks for reaching out to us, @payrollquestion123. I'm delighted to provide information about how paying and filing taxes works with QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
If you use QBDT Payroll Assisted, please know that we pay and file your Maryland local taxes for you. Also, local taxes are calculated and tracked based on your setup.
Moreover, you can pay taxes and file forms electronically in your Maryland state taxes if you have the QBDT Payroll Enhanced. Check out the E-file and e-pay separately, E-file only, or E-pay only section of this article for the entire process: E-file and e-pay state forms and taxes in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Enhanced.
However, you’ll need to manually pay and file your Maryland local taxes to your state agency outside of the program for the QBDT Payroll Basic, Standard, or Enhanced subscription. Refer to this article to seamlessly understand the process: Pay and file payroll taxes and forms manually in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.
Additionally, check out this article in case you need to view your payroll tax payments and forms in QBDT: View your previously filed tax forms and payments.
I'm all ears if you have more concerns about filing local tax forms in QBDT. Just reply here, and I'll be there to help you out. Have a great day!
The issue is not how to set it up. The issue is that according to a QuickBooks Message State of Maryland does not except the withholding payments.
"Problem: Maryland is not yet accepting new year payments and filings electronically.
Solution: Please wait to send in your 2024 payments/filings. Maryland DOR is in the process of transitioning to a new system. It is expected to be ready to e-file the week of February 19. There will not be any penalties as a result of this delay."
Although today is February 26, 2024
Same issue. I'm registered in the new Maryland Tax Connect portal but still cannot pay taxes through Quickbooks.
Thank you for joining the thread, @rtl999.
Let me help and provide information on why you’re unable to pay your Maryland withholding taxes through their site and in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
Currently, Maryland withholding is moving to a new system, and QBDT customers can’t e-file or e-pay 2024 withholding taxes. While the agency prepares the new system, customers will not be penalized for paying or filing 2024 withholding late for any payments due before they open up their new system.
For now, it is best to contact our Support Team so they can include you in the list of affected users. This way, they will be able to notify you as soon as any solution is available.

That's a very convenient response from someone who A) Has no actual data as to when this will be addressed. B) Will not be heavily penalized for late filings and deposits. According to Maryland's website our payments through Feb are now overdue as we are accelerated filers with payment/filings due within 3 business days. Of course we still remain unable to pay them. Where is our guarantee that we will not be paying late fees?
Interest & Penalty Policy
The policies below apply to the following tax and fee types: Employer Withholding Tax; Sales and Use Tax; Tobacco Taxes; Motor Fuel Taxes; Admissions and Amusement Taxes; Tire Fee; Bay Restoration Fee; Transportation Network Fee.
From what you posted from the MD site, interest and penalties are waived until April 15, 2024.
You should pay closer attention. Dec 23 - Feb24 is due Apr 15. Try heading to their new portal and filing a return from Mar 1. It now contains penalties.
I read it perfectly, thanks. What you should understand is that when the forgiveness policy was released by the Comptrollers office (late December) they expected any technical issues to be resolved on MD Connect by mid February. It hasn't worked out that way which should be of no surprise and they never updated the policy on the site for March filings. Later notices from the Quickbooks efile team advised that resolution would be around mid March with no penalties for late filing. They are in direct contact with the Comptrollers office. Non-payroll related returns and payments are not processing correctly on the portal as well -- and those are manually entered not efiled or epayed through a third party software. ACH payments made on the portal are processing through client banks for S&U tax but not showing as paid on the portal. It will eventually work itself out, but the issues and the resolutions lay with the Comptrollers office not with Quickbooks.
