I've set-up direct deposit for payroll and no problems. Today I run payroll and it's telling me to print paper checks. Why would it change and how do I fix it?

Why did QBO switch my direct deposit to paper checks?

Hi @abtrkg

Let me provide several reasons for the sudden change in your payroll setup.

Please know that this automatic adjustment usually happens if one of these reasons occurs to ensure compliance and prevent potential issues.

Here are some common factors that have led to the change:

  • The direct deposit details for your employees might not have been properly set up or verified.
  • The bank accounts linked to payroll may have been removed, changed, or invalidated.
  • If the employer’s or employee’s bank account associated with direct deposit fails verification, QuickBooks defaults to paper checks.
  • There may have been a manual change to payroll settings or a recent issue with bank account verification.
  • Payroll may have been processed too late to meet the deadline for direct deposit, which typically requires submission at least two business days before payday.

To resolve this issue, I recommend reviewing your company’s payroll setup and ensuring that direct deposit is correctly configured. Also, double-check the payment method settings in your employees' profiles to confirm they are set to direct deposit.

You can refer to the following articles for guidance on how to set up your company and employees' payroll for direct deposit:
