2023 PA SUI employee rate change

PA changed their employee rate for unemployment this year (2023).  I can change the employer rate but QB will not let me change the employee rate.  I did the payroll update but it is not on there.  Any help would be appreciated - I have to do payroll!!

Thanks

Jo-Ann

Hi MaryLandT,

Yes, I tried that.  Unfortunately, it wouldn't let me change the employee rate.  I spoke with QB and there is an update on January 12th that will fix this.

Thank you so much for your reply!  Have a blessed and happy new year!

I'm glad to see that you're able to update the State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) rate in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll, JS1979.

You're on the right track. The Employee rate is on the same window where you change the Company rate. I'll show you the steps.

  1. Go to the Lists menu and select Payroll Item List.
  2. Double-click [state abbreviation] - Unemployment Company.
  3. Select Next until you reach the Company and employee tax rates page.
  4. Enter the correct Company and Employee rates for each quarter.
  5. Click Next, then Finish.

For more information about how to make some changes and check the current payroll updates, these articles below will help you.

I hope my response makes your day. Please don't hesitate to hit that Reply button if you have additional questions regarding your state taxes. Have a great day ahead.

I have been on the chat line two different times and have repeated the same message twice. I explained you can change the employers rate but not the employees. Just completed 3 payrolls with the incorrect rate. People at the chat room service do not understand the system does not work, they need to change it. Sorry I could not help.

I can only imagine the back-and-forth you've had in trying to get help, @hicks590. I want to give you some information on the adjustments made to the PA SUI rate.

The payroll tax table hasn't been updated to reflect the rate change from 0.06% to 0.07% as of yet. Rest assured that we're working on it so you can easily resume business.

See this module: Employee Withholding for PA in 2023 to find out more details about the changes.

Once everything is good, browse these helpful articles to keep track and manage payroll transactions in QBDT.

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering when they were going to update it. Ridiculous that it isn't already done.

What happens when the payroll needs to be run prior to QB updating the rate? How is the adjustment made so the payroll is correct?

Further, I don't understand why it wasn't already updated.

I understand that there will be an update to PA Employee SUI on 1/12/23, which will change employee rate from .06% to  .07%. However, my payroll checks will be issued 1/13/23 and are e-pay through QB. Therefore, I have to submit my data to Intuit on 1/11/23. Will the 1/12/23 update "catchup" on the next pay period on 1/31/23 for each employee?

2023 PA SUI employee rate change

Hi:

I understand that a fix to the PA SUI Employee rate will not occur until 1/12/23. If that is the case, should I MANUALLY fix the amount withdrawn from each employee paycheck to reflect the new rate of .07% on my 1/11/23 payroll submission. OR...will the update on 1/12/23 compensate for the underpayment of my 1/11/23 payroll at .06% by taking out MORE on my 1/31/23 payroll?

Hi there, Pam-Liberty1.

Thanks for joining this thread. I want to make sure your payroll is on track for the upcoming pay period.

Regarding the payroll update, I recommend contacting the QuickBooks Desktop Support Team for more in depth info regarding the update and the status of the rates for your employees. The following link provides the steps to get in touch with the team: Contact Payroll Support

Additionally, in reference to manually withdrawing amounts, I suggest going over this with your accountant to be sure. They'll be able to tell you exactly what and if anything needs to be changed. If you don't currently have an accountant, you can find one in your area specifically trained in QuickBooks by searching the ProAdvisor site

We're aware that the unemployment rate in Pennsylvania has changed. You can continue to process payroll as usual since the new rate isn't included on the current tax table.

Our Payroll Compliance Team still working to implement the new PA SUI employee rate on the upcoming payroll updates. When it becomes available, QuickBooks software will automatically create an adjustment for each of your employees on the next pay period. Follow the steps below to get the latest payroll tax table.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Employees menu
  2. Select Get Payroll Updates.
  3. Choose the Download Entire Update checkbox, then click on the Update button.
  4. Once done, a window appears when the download is complete.

You can read this article to find more information on the most recent payroll update (22301): Get the latest payroll news and updates in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.

2023 PA SUI employee rate change

I am so glad you posted this question - I've been searching for the same resolution myself since the 1st of the year! I'm in Alaska, and our unemployment tax rates and taxable wage base also changed for 2023, and I've been unable to update these rates, so frustrating!!! I finally got through to someone at QB after them telling me the same steps posted below, even after telling them I've already tried this and it doesn't work. They told me the update that would fix this would be available on the 6th, so after updating and finding this didn't fix things I was pretty upset. This is so ridiculous that they do not have the ability to correct this by the 1st of the year, KNOWING businesses have to process payroll. I am on a weekly payroll cycle and have had to manually calculate taxes each payroll. Seriously not happy with QB right now They need to do better!

Why would they pick 1/12/2023 as their launch date for the update when if they looked closely, they would see we need to run payroll for our DD employees on 1/11/23 because of the holiday? Pathetic.

How do I update this for QuickBooks online? It is now the 13th, and it still hasn't updated with the employees' rate that was supposed to change as of the 1st of January. I cannot manually update the employee's rate, but it did allow me to update the employers rate. I need to finish payroll by today even though the deadline date was yesterday.

I am using QB Desktop 2023.  I've run the payroll updates and the PA SUI employee rate is still .06% when it should be .07%.  When will this update get applied?

2023 PA SUI employee rate change

Hello there, @pwenner.

Let's make sure you're running and using the latest tax table version so you can update the PA SUI employee rate in your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Payroll account and keep your payroll data updated.

The latest payroll update (22302) already included the current PA SUI employee rate. Since the increase to 0.07% from 0.06% effective 1/1/2023 is already implemented, the program will adjust your withholdings to make up for the incorrect amounts on previous paychecks. To find more information on the latest payroll update (22302), you can read this article: Get the latest payroll news and updates in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.

To check the tax table version you're using, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Employees, then select Get Payroll Updates.
  2. To know your tax table version, check the number next to You are using tax table version, and 22302 should be indicated.
  3. To find more details on your tax table version, select Payroll Update Info.

If the tax table isn't the 22302 version, go ahead and get the latest one. To do this, here's how:

  1. Go to Employees, then select Get Payroll Updates.
  2. Click Download Entire Update.
  3. Select Update. An informational window appears when the download is complete.

If you're already using the latest payroll update 22302, and your PA SUI employee rate still shows 0.06%, I encourage you to reach out to our Payroll Care team. They can create a case to trigger an investigation and get the issue fixed in no time. Here's how:

  1. Go to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Select the Contact Us button.
  3. Enter a brief description of your concern in the What can we help you with? field and click Continue.
  4. Choose a way to connect (Chat or Callback).

Once everything is all set, you may also want to check out this article to guide you on what you need to get done this tax season using QBDT Payroll: Year-end checklist for QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.

If you have other payroll concerns or questions about managing employees in QBDT Payroll, please don't hesitate to comment below. I'm always ready to help. Take care, @pwenner.
