941 for previous quarter - how to file?

Hi there, @th1ruma1a.

Creating forms for the last quarter of 2019 is unavailable since QuickBooks Desktop already updated for 2020.

You can visit this Prior Year Products section on the IRS website to download the form's 2019 version, then manually file the form.

Here's an article you can read to learn more about filing your 941 tax form: File Quarterly Tax Forms.

Feel free to post if you have additional questions. Have a great day!

I’m actually referring to Q12020 - QB not allowing to submit; Q2  2020 is ok.

941 for previous quarter - how to file?

Glad to have you back here in the Community, @th1ruma1a.

I've got some clarifications to share regarding filing your 941 form for quarter one in QuickBooks Desktop.

QuickBooks Desktop doesn't allow you to file late forms in the system. You can only e-file the forms for the current quarter.

To get your work done, you may pull up and print the said form, just make sure to select the correct quarter and file it manually to the IRS.

You also have the option to gather the 941 form's data and download the form from the IRS website and mail it to them.

Moreover, you can process it manually through the Tax Form Worksheets in QBDT.

Here's how:

  1. Click on Reports at the top menu bar.
  2. Choose Employees & Payroll.
  3. Hit on More Payroll Reports in Excel.
  4. Select Tax Form Worksheets
  5. An Excel file will open and hit on Enable Edit at the top.
  6. Select Quarterly 941 on the QuickBooks Tax Worksheet window.
  7. Choose the correct date range and press on Create Report

Please refer to this article for more details: Excel-based payroll reports.

I'm also adding here some resources that you can visit to give you more insights regarding filing and preparing the quarterly tax forms in QuickBooks Desktop:

I'm just a post away if you have any other questions about payroll forms in QuickBooks Desktop. I'll be happy to help you out. Have a great day.

The resulting report is nothing like the report that is normally generated on Form 941

You said "QuickBooks Desktop doesn't allow you to file late forms in the system. You can only e-file the forms for the current quarter."

Why not?

Reading through the other like support pages, there was an issue with Q2 2020 forms which prevented filing.  I just filed Q3 2020 and tried to file Q2 and the form claimed it could not be filed.

1.  How do I create the Q2 Form?   Using Excel reports is not the answer

2.  Why can't I e-file it?

I have to agree with @split. How come you don't allow an electronic filing of previous or late quarters? I did not get a notification from the last quarter being due to file and now I am late. You could allow your users to submit late 941 forms. What does that mean to manually file? I don't want to file manually. I purchased your software so i don't have to file manually. This is poor service.
