I'm trying to create the W2 file in quickbooks desktop to upload to the NC Department of Revenue. When I go to select the state as NC it says that state is not valid. I already did a payroll update today.
Let me share some insights about filing your W-2s through QuickBooks, @dmcsbb.
I appreciate you creating and uploading the form to the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
You can run through these steps to ensure you are on the correct process:
Refer to this article for the detailed steps of this process: File your state W-2s with Quickbooks Desktop Payroll Enhanced.

That's not what I want. In past years, I would go to Employees > Payroll Tax Forms & W-2s > Create State W-2 E-file. From there it would begin a process where it would open an excel spreadsheet and take me through a series of windows to create the excel file which I could then upload. Part of this process is that it presents a window where I would choose the state (in this case NC) but NC does not appear this year for some reason.
Good morning, @dmcsbb.

Since you've already tried the troubleshooting steps, then I recommend contacting our Customer Support Team for further assistance. They'll be able to use a screen share to help walk you through some additional steps. Here's how:
It's that easy!
Keep us updated on how the call goes. I want to ensure that you're able to get back to running your business. Wishing you continued success!
I ended up contacting QB to get a call and the agent helped me work through it. It's not as simple as creating the worksheet and clicking on efile (it was grayed out and I was not able to select it until I did the following). I first had to go to Change Filing Method under Employees. On each of my company files, if the W-2 had efile selected, I had to change it to Print and Mail. Then when I completed the state worksheet, I was able to select efile and it worked like a charm.
Hello can you please give more direction on what you did. I have talked to OB today for 2 hours and I am still not able to file my W2's by efile to NC. As far as I know we still need to upload a text file like we did in the past years when I go to their website. So if this does work please give us detailed instructions if you would otherwise I am going to have to manually enter 1,000 into their system.
Thank you for your help
Hello there, @LostW2inNC.
For QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), the option available to mark your sales tax as paid is through the Pay Sales Tax window.
You can continue using that window whenever you pay your sales tax. This is recommended so you can avoid errors in your bookkeeping. Before you continue though, don't forget to run the Sales Tax Liability report to gather the info you can use to fill out your state/provincial sales tax forms.
Right after, you can proceed with filing and paying your sales tax on your DOR's website.
In case you need to make adjustments on your sales tax, take a look at this article: Process sales tax adjustment. Here you'll find the steps on how you can adjust the sales tax amount, as well as other related links.
Feel free to leave a comment below if you have other questions. I'll be sure to get back to you.
I don't know why someone posted something about sales tax because this has nothing to do with that.
You need to go to the Employee Center, then to the File Forms tab. At the bottom in the middle select "Change Filing Method" at the bottom center. Hit Continue, then Next, then you will see Filing Methods for the Federal Form W-2/W-3. If E-file is selected, you need to change that to Print and Mail (I know it sounds counter-intuitive but this is what you need to do). Then select Next, then Finish, then Finish Later at the bottom left of the window.
Now go to File Forms and scroll down to the bottom and select State-W-2s - NC State W-2s Worksheet (E-file Only) and Create Form. This will open the window to show you your W-2 and W-3 forms. If they are ok, then click on Submit Form on the bottom right. A window will pop up and you then need to click on E-file (if you're filing method as described above wasn't set to Print and Mail then the E-file on this window will be grayed out and you won't be able to click on it). Once you click on E-file, another window will open and it will show you that the forms will be e-filed to the NC DOR. You must have an email address and phone number entered or they won't be submitted. Within a day, an email will be sent to the address you entered confirming the forms were sent and received.
