Intuit Removed Write Check/Enter Time Function for Manual Payroll

After speaking with at least 5 different service reps for over 4 hours, I was finally told that QB removed the function that grabs time for employees when writing a check to enter payroll manually.

We have a third party (Gusto) do payroll for us, and I used to write a check in QB with the employee job time so we could track job costing in our reports. When they "updated" it, they removed the Enter Time function.......Has anyone found a good work around for this? I attached an example of what I'm talking about.

Essentially their "fix" was that I purchase a payroll subscription so I can have that function back or manually enter all the line items from the weekly timesheet into the items tab on the check. Ridiculous that they remove functions when you buy a newer version. Gusto works so much better than QB payroll I don't want to go back. Ironically it will still work for old employees time, but not the new ones.

I use QB Pro Desktop 2021

Intuit Removed Write Check/Enter Time Function for Manual Payroll

Hi there,KME2.

I appreciate you for reaching out to us here on the Community page.

As mentioned by my colleague @Giovann_G, entering the time function in the Write Check screen isn't available anymore. You need to purchase a payroll subscription so you'll have that function back or manually enter all the line items from the weekly timesheet into the items tab on the check.

I can see how it would be useful to have this option to Enter time in the Write Check, I'd suggest sending feedback straight to our product developers/engineers to be considered in the future. They are constantly finding ways to improve our product and service to make QuickBooks work the way your business needs.

To send product feedback in QBDT:

  1. Go to Help at the top menu bar.
  2. Choose Send Feedback Online.
  3. Select Product Suggestion.
  4. Enter your product request/product suggestion.
  5. Click Send Feedback tab.

Let me know if you have any other QuickBooks questions, I'm always here to help. Have a wonderful day!

Hi there, @KME2

You may utilize the Time Tracking feature in QuickBooks Desktop to track your employees' hours.

Here's how to setup:

  1. Sign in as the Admin. Be sure to be in Single-user Mode.
  2. Go to the Edit menu. Then, select Preferences.
  3. In the Preferences window, select Time & Expenses.
  4. Select the Company Preferences tab.
  5. For the Do You Track Time? option, select Yes.
  6. In the First Day of Work Week drop-down list, choose the day on which you start tracking time each week. (Note: The day you choose affects all weekly timesheets. For example, if you choose Sunday, your timesheets begin with Sunday.)
  7. Select Ok.

Once done, you can create a weekly or single timesheet. You can also create a report that shows timesheet data. Please refer to this link for more information: Create and print timesheets

I'm always here should you have any follow-up questions. Have a great day.

I double checked this, and my company settings already matched your recommendations. I am still unable to select Enter Time when trying to write a check. Thanks anyway 👍

I double checked the settings and they matched your recommendations. I continue to not be able to select Enter Time when writing an employee check.

Thanks for getting back to this thread to inform us of the outcome, @KME2

Let me chime in and add some insights about the Enter Time feature in QuickBooks Desktop.

When creating a check, make sure to click the Enter time option to associate this to the timesheet you saved. Let me show you how:

  1. Go to the Banking menu at the top portion.
  2. Select Write Checks.
  3. Enter the necessary information in the Write Checks window.
  4. Click the Enter Time option.
  5. Choose the Time Period and click OK.
  6. Once done, click Save and Close.

Moving forward, here's an article I've attached to guide you create and track time off, vacation, and sick pay for your employees: Set up and track time off in payroll.

Please get back to this thread if you have other concerns about handling the time tracking feature in QuickBooks. I'll be happy to lend a hand. Keep safe and healthy always.

The Enter Time button is greyed out, not allowing me to click it. I included a screenshot in the original post.

I know the importance of having the Enter Time function, KME2.

I'm here to clarify and help you out in handling your employee's time.

The Enter Time function in the Write Check screen isn't available anymore. As an alternative, you can utilize the Time Tracking feature to track your employee's job costs. You can follow the steps provided by my colleague LieraMarie_A above. I know this may cause a lot of work for you. But as the moment goes by, you'll get used to this.

In addition, you can read through this guide to learn more about running reports that show timesheet data: Create and print timesheets.

Do you have any other questions about tracking your job costing? Let me know and I'll get back to you with some guides and details.

Intuit Removed Write Check/Enter Time Function for Manual Payroll

Ok, I found a solution. I checked into subscribing to the payroll service, even though we already use Gusto and do not want to change..........We would have to pay $50/month for the cheapest QB payroll option. That is way too much just to get this function back. Its crazy to require us to pay extra for features Intuit decides to all the sudden remove.

Basically what I have to do to bypass Intuit blocking the Enter Time button is to create a vendor for the new employees. Then I can download their timesheet from Gusto, transfer that info to a  Timer Activity file exported from my QB file. Change the employee name to match the vendor and whaalla. I can now write a check and select the time for the employee/vendor. If anyone wants to know more of the details on how to do this, I have written an article for all the steps.

Thanks QB
