Oregon Transit Taxes

I have payroll that falls into two different transit districts in Oregon.  The tax is paid based on the district the work was performed in.  We have OR-Trimet and City of Wilsonville SMART.  The Wilsonville SMART tax is a new area for us.  I setup the payroll item for Wilsonville SMART tax through a user defined payroll item as there is not a default item for this.  

 

1. I cannot get the Wilsonville Transit tax to show up on an employees check although the tax was added to the employees profile.  How do I fix this?

 

2. Both taxes are calculated as a percentage of gross wages, tips, etc.  How can I split the calculation between the two districts?  For example employee works 5 hours in Wilsonville and 25 hours in the Tri-Met district.  

 

Lastly, is there a way to get tips to go to a specific class instead of Quickbooks deciding to allocate equally across all hours?

First, to fix the Wilsonville Transit tax to show up on an employees check although the tax was added to the employee's profile, I suggest reverting the paycheck by following these steps:

 

1. Click the Employees menu.

2. Choose Payroll Center.

3. Select the Pay Employees tab and click the Start Unscheduled Payroll button.

4. You'll be routed to the Enter Payroll Information page. Then, right-click the name of the employee and select Revert Paycheck.

 

For additional information on reverting a paycheck and how to save paychecks and return later to finish creating payroll without losing your data, please check this article: How to save or revert pending paychecks.

 

Lastly, there's no option/way to get tips to go to a specific class instead of Quickbooks deciding to allocate equally across all hours. To see additional information, you can click this article: Payroll 101.

In QuickBooks Desktop, the option to split the calculation between the two districts isn't available. I can see how ideal and benefit to accomplish this in the program. For now, I’d recommend checking our blog website to check the recent improvements, news, and product enhancements.

I have to manually make the changes on each check, in my case it is an employer paid item such as the Tri-met so it does not affect the employees check so I can go back and fix it after the check run.  It is a hassle and I wish this could be fixed, it is one of the items that needs to be fixed especially for construction companies, it should be a function under the customer setup so that when setting up the job you can select which district it is in so that the payroll tax is added or not added correctly.

Im  with you ..

How do we track tri-met then work in another NON tri-met area. There is no way I can see to have the tax taken out of  one county  from another there is no way to track each job  in  tri-met areas and NON tri-met areas. I really think its all set up that way .. Oregon sets things up like employer and employee can pay half  of a tax but to do it in the books there is no way to divide that tax.  Quickbooks isnt so quick when it comes to that .But turbo tax sure helps the state of oregon wanting to know if we work in portland then they slam you will a business tax . I call that in cahoots' with the government , just another way liberals track ya.
