QuickBooks Online Payroll W4 Entry - Mass. PFML Setup - Can't Enter Effective Date W4 system will not let me enter an Effective Date for new employee

Hi there, IreneWachsler,

Are you getting an error message upon entering an effective date? I've tried this and the system allows me to select one. See the attached screenshot below for your visual guide.

If not, let's perform the recommended troubleshooting steps to isolate and fix this issue. There could be some browser hiccups. If it's overloaded, it can cause unexpected results. Thus, not letting you enter an effective date for the new employee.

The first step to take is to use a private window. Browsing privately disables the cache from saving your data, and it's a good way to check issues caused by a full cache.

When that works, clear the cache and cookies on your browser to refresh website history that might be causing issues when using QuickBooks.

If you're getting the same results, I highly suggest contacting our QuickBooks Online Payroll Team. They can further investigation what's causing you not enter an effective date.

I've got some steps we can perform to get you sign in to your Intuit Online Payroll account, Grace11.

Have you encountered an error message when logging in to your Payroll account? This helps us check if there's a reported case about this one.

To better isolate this one, let's try signing in to your Payroll account using a private or incognito window. This mode doesn't use the existing cache data and helps us confirm browser-related issues.

Here's how to access the private window:

  • For Google Chrome browser: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • For Mozilla Firefox browser: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • For Safari browser: Command + Option + P

Go to qbo.intuit.com if you are using QuickBooks Online (QBO) and QuickBooks Online Payroll. For Intuit Online Payroll Enhanced, log in to iop.intuit.com.

For more details about this one, see Sign in to your Intuit Online Payroll Enhanced/Full Service or QuickBooks Online Payroll account article.

If it works, go back to your regular browser and clear the cache to delete those temporarily stored files and browsing history. Overtime collection of data can create corruption, but removing this should fix the issue.

Alternatively, use other supported, up-to-date browsers to roll out the possibility of a browser-related issue.

Visit our Payroll management page to provide you with articles about common payroll topics.

You can always count on me if you need a hand with running your payroll or any QBO related. I'm always here to address them for you. Have a great day ahead.
